Sis, as she was affectionately named by her adoring older brothers, joined a hard-working ranching family but was said to be “spoiled rotten” by her much older brothers. Alice adored her Mama and told many stories of the time they spent together – especially when her four eldest brothers enlisted during WWII.
After graduating high school, she moved to the “big city” of Albuquerque to attend business school. While working there she met a handsome, southern airman and married him a short three months later. Together, they shared a loving journey of 60 years that ended with Grover’s death in 2017.
Alice was a lover. She loved Jesus and her family above all else but had plenty of love for everyone. She was a member of First Baptist Church and served in most every capacity over her 58 years there.
She was the Round Valley Middle school secretary for 34 plus years. While there she loved every student that crossed her path. She never met an underdog or misfit that she didn’t befriend and defend. It’s anyone’s guess, and she would never tell, the number of lunches, pairs of shoes, winter jackets and school trips that she funded. She loved her “school kids” and would still ask about them to the end.
She is survived by her daughters: Jacque Easley (Jarrett) of Mtn. Home, AR, Sandra Burke (Bob) of Las Vegas, NV, Janet Staggs (Betsy) of Chandler, AZ and Jayme Hancock (Robert) of Austin, TX; Grandchildren: Cynthia DeLeon, Clinton Rowell, Kayla Staggs, J.T. Easley, Jocelyn Gonten, and Jacob Easley; Great-Grandchildren: Gavin, Lily, Bradley, Claire, Melody, Kennedy and Lincoln; beloved sister-in-laws: Louise Ray (J.O.Puett), Jody Hightower and Thelma Hewell (John) all of Gainesville, GA; Nieces and Nephews: Porters and Dyers too numerous to list, but all loved so dearly by Aunt Alice.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved Dyer; adored grandson Eddie Staggs; six brothers; Horace, Preston, Louis, David, Eugene and Melvin; sister Annie McMahon.
A celebration of life will be 11 a.m., Saturday March 9, 2019, First Baptist Church Springerville, AZ. Viewing will be 10 a.m. with luncheon in the church fellowship hall immediately after services.
