Biography

When Alis Essie Kemp walked into the room, those in her company felt energy, an enthusiastic spontaneity. This was just one example of who Alis was and how she impacted those around her.

Alis was born on April 15, 1944 in Santa Monica, California. She was the daughter of John and Sybil Mermer. Alis was raised in Orange County California.

Alis was raised with 5 brothers and sisters. She had three brothers (Bob, Terry, and Tony) and two sisters (Stephanie and Eva). She remained close to her family throughout her life and enjoyed reminiscing on their shared experiences which usually included her playing some kind of practical joke on them.

With a talent for making acquaintances easily which in turn brought her an endless stream of friends, Alis was very sociable and could blend without effort into any social group. Assertive and outgoing, Alis was easy to know and demonstrated a deep concern for others. Later in life, she enjoyed being social and had many friends including the staff at Legacy House.

On July 2, 1966 Alis married Robert "Bob" Kemp. Bob was a Seabee in the United States Navy and for 20 years they enjoyed moving to various duty stations throughout the United States and even for a time they lived in Athens, Greece. Alis enjoyed being a military wife and raising her family in a military community. She was a patriotic American and instilled these values in her children.

Alis was blessed with 4 children: Two daughters, Monica and Nita (Matt) and two sons, Robert and Steven. She and Bob were also blessed with 10 grandchildren, Kristen, Staci (Evan), Tyler, Kelsey, Hanna, McKenzie (Mario), Kyle, Kaleb, Kylie (Skyler), Kaden.

Alis was a hard worker and throughout her life she had jobs in the food and beverage industry, Her primary occupation was restaurant management. Alis's fellow workers saw her as a supporter and a mentor and she continued this even into retirement where she wouldn't hesitate to tell someone at a restaurant they were doing a good job or give feedback to the chef if there were issues.

She enjoyed music and dancing and watching movies. She could tell you the plot and actors of almost any vintage movie and would sing along with any song that came on the radio (even if she didn't know the words).

Alis was a woman who was dedicated and devoted to her faith. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church for most of her life. Her day would start and end with thanks for the life she had and she relied on her faith to help guide her towards the end of her life.

Alis Kemp passed away on April 11, 2021 at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada surrounded by her beloved family. She is survived by her children Monica, Robert, Steven and Nita (Matt); her grandchildren Kristen, Staci (Evan), Tyler, Kelsey, Hanna, McKenzie (Mario), Kyle, Kaleb, Kylie (Skyler), Kaden; her great grandchildren Terryn, Kase, Aiden and Noah; and her brothers and sisters Bob, Terry, Tony, Stephanie and Eva. Services were held at Palm Northwest in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alis will laid to rest with her husband, Bob, at the Southern Nevada Veteran's Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.

There was always a certain style and inventiveness to Alis. She was a dynamic, self-expressive person who was forever looking to celebrate the endless possibilities life had to offer. She had a knack for being clever, creative and witty, and for others, was a joy to be around. While she was often fiercely independent, it seemed as if many others looked to Alis Kemp for inspiration, leadership, wisdom and even courage. Alis was always more than willing to share life’s experiences with her loved ones.
