Sister Betty M. Watson was born on Monday, September 1, 1941 in Yantly, Alabama. She was the second oldest child (eldest daughter) of Jesse P. Roberts and Lucinda A. Roberts. Betty later moved to Lisman, Alabama where she was educated at Choctaw County Training School of Alabama which was the beginning of an extraordinary life. She met the (love of her life) Davis Watson whom she married on September 24, 1960. From this wonderful union, two children were born: Myra and Jacqueline. Betty wore the gift of motherhood proudly as she provided for and protected her children’s needs before her own. During her early school years, she helped raise her eight younger siblings and the Marsh children – Ralph, Ronnie, LaDonne and Sophie as her own.
After marriage, Betty and Davis started their lives in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, later moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1964, where she raised her children while attending trade school for computer key-punch. She began working for Sears Roebucks and Co. after 25 years of dedicated service. During this time, she and her family were faithful members of St. Matthew-Gordon A.M.E. Zion Church where she was an active member for 30 years. Serving and honoring her faith in God on the Deaconess and Missionary Board. During her later years in Chicago, her maternal love continued where she and Davis raised and adopted their eldest granddaughter Furlena (Fee Fee) Hampton.
In 1996, they all relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada where she continued to serve her Lord at Mount Zion and Greater Evergreen MBC.
Betty was the best example of a “Virtuous Woman”. She was well loved, respected and cherished by her husband, her family, her friends and her neighbors.
On Sunday, January 19, 2014, Betty completed her earthly journeys and now she’s with her Lord and Savior. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse P. and Lucinda Roberts, brothers Jesse, Tommie, Andrew, Jerry and Lawrence. She leaves to cherish in her memory her loving husband Davis Watson; two daughters, Myra Watson-Toles (Walter), Jacqueline Watson-Gurley (Anthony), three grand children Furlena (Fee Fee), Amanda and Walter III (Trae), her one and only Great-Grandson; Mr. Zion, Brother Willie C. Roberts (Doug); sisters Floriaetta Roberts, Melvinia Turner, Florence Dixon (Timothy), Sadie M. Cade, Running Buddies who were like sisters to her – the late Alberta Toles, Vickie Wilson, Audrey Allen and Golda Franklin.
