

Catherine Kanston was born on August 31. 1927. She was an only child and she wished for siblings, She met her future husband, Harry A. Kanston Jr., when she was thirteen years old. They married after he joined the Marines and she attended college. They lived in Virginia and Chicago before settling in New York, where they raised their five children. After retiring from the New York City Board of Education as an elevator operator, Catherine and her husband returned to Hampton. Virginia. She decided that she wanted more excitement, so they moved to Las Vegas 35 years ago. During her time in Las Vegas, she volunteered for Catholic Charities and the Democratic Party. She belonged to the AFSCME Retiree Association and Montford Marine Association Auxiliary.
She never cursed. She would always say, "What in the ham sandwich?" She liked game shows, especially Jeopardy, which she shared with her great granddaughter, Nadi. She loved to dance to R and B songs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry A. Kanston Jr., and her two sons, Patrick and Harry the third. She leaves to mourn three children, Carroll, Sandra, and Sylvia., eleven grandchildren, Bryant, Julian, Tjada, Telisha, Fred, Jr.,Tamiko, Akbar, Karriem, Hassan, Terrell, and Carl. She also leaves 19 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren as well as a host of friends, neighbors and family.
A visitation will be held at Palm Mortuary - Cheyenne, located at 7400 West Cheyenne Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89129, on January 20, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at the same location from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
The graveside service is scheduled for January 21, 2026, from 9:20 am to 9:50 am, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, located at 1900 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Boulder City, NV 89005, which will also be Catherine's final resting place.
