Dear Pop Davey family,
I am very sorry to learn of your loss. Danny Davey and I are first cousins. His dad and mine, Paul Davey, were brothers. Because he was 13 years older than me, he knew my dad better than me in some ways. That's because my dad died early when I was only ten. Before dad married mom, he had more time and would swing by to pick up Danny to go on trips he was taking or to get ice cream. Danny was able to tell me things about my dad I would never have known otherwise. Like what a jokester he was, including whistling at girls, (probably inappropriate now but not so much in the 1950s). Anyway, I always appreciated he loved my dad and had stories about him.
Later on, when I was in my early 20s, I got on the job with the Alton Fire Department. Pop was a cool guy who was kind and generous. When I first got hired, he and I were on different shifts. He was an Assistant Chief but he treated me, a greenhorn rookie, with dignity and respect. He even shared his locker with me for a month or so while I waited for one of my own to come available.
I tried playing racquetball with him but it was no fun for either of us as he was too good for me to challenge him. I never even tried handball because I knew he would slaughter me. As I recall he won the Illinois State Championship for handball at the B or C level. Either way, he was fun to watch play. Like me, he had a short, squat body, but unlike me, he had cat-like quickness and was ambidextrous at the sport. A gifted athlete.
He loved his family as I'm sure you know. I never got to visit him in Las Vegas, but my sisters, Madeleine and Molly, and nieces Christina and Kerry did. They got to meet Teddy also who was living in Vegas at the time. Molly and Madeleine are both singers so they have a lot of fun hanging out together.
Sending love and prayers for Danny and the large family he leaves behind. Take good care Davey Fam.
