Cindy was such a special lady.  Words cannot say all the memories and wonderful thoughts I have about this great friend.  I was always thankful that she was my son's Mother-in-law and my grand children's other grandmother.  I was 2000 miles away so Cindy served the family for both of us.  I will miss her so very much.

I will be forever grateful to Cindy. Her caretaking, loving spirit touched my life from the time she fostered my best friend, Valarie Ann, to the many years she raised my girls in her loving house with her husband, Lew, and daughter, Karena. Bringing my girls over to Cindy's house felt so safe, so right, so easy. Celebrating Christmas morning with my little girls, eating yearly lobster dinners (and learning how to crack into one), swimming in her backyard poolwe enjoyed Cindy's hospitality that wasn't really hospitality, it was pure love. I'm so sorry she had to fight so hard in these last years, but she never seemed to lose her spark. And I do believe that Cindy left us on her own terms. Thank you, Cindy.

This is going to be long, so apologies.

I think it's pretty lucky to have a close, warm family full of people that are full of love no matter what. I was also lucky enough to have two very special people in my lifemy whole life, from the very first daywho weren't technically family, but who loved and took care of my sister and I as if we were. My mom would drop my little sister and I off at Cindy and Lew's house before my mom went to teach at the local high school, and my dad would pick us up when he was done with his night shift. But in those early morning and afternoon hours, it was Cindy's house and Cindy's rules.

Cindy cooked us breakfast and played with us, sometimes taking us to her job at a local shoe store where Kate and I ran around and took perfume samples out of shoe boxes (an odd place for perfume samples, but they were there). She took me to my first day of kindergarten and was there to call the ER when I ate an air freshener/tried to shave my legs/stuffed a sponge up my nose/did other insane baby things. She and Lew loved having us around and made us feel important and special and safe. And we weren't the only kids who had their own special 'Cindy and Lew.' Before us, she essentially (or maybe even literally) adopted my mom's best friend and my godmother, Val, when Val was 16 and needed a place to stay. They were only a few years older than her, but just like with Kate and I, they were kind and loving and strict with her (a remarkable feat, if you've ever met Val you can imagine what a handful she must have been as a teenagerwhew! ; ) ).

But it wasn't all just care-taking and rule-making. There were BBQs, afternoons at the pool, annual lobster boils, Christmas morning biscuits and eggs, surprise care packages, and goodie bags full of make-up samples that my sister and I probably got half of our make-up from from the time we were allowed to wear it until just a few years ago. It's only been a few months since I received a big box in the mail at work, stuffed with candy, soaps, lotion and a little owl-shaped air freshener. Even while Cindy was sick, battling cancer and a weak heart and confusion, she was full of thoughtful surprisessurprises that always smelled like Bath and Body Works.

I loved her so much and I'll miss her a lot.
