Donald P. Uhl spent the last days of his life in the familiar, much-loved peacefulness of his home in Summerlin, NV where he enjoyed watching golfers hitting balls and a quail family raising their young. He journeyed into after life on May 17, 2024 with family by his side.
Don loved his family and country and was a friend to all. He woke every day with a smile on his face and a heart filled with joy. He was the ultimate optimist and everyone’s cheerleader and because of that all whom he met had a better day from the encounter. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. It brought tears to his eyes just thinking and talking about them.
He was an avid golfer who got his 7th hole in one in his 86th year of life. He was true gentleman in every sense of the word and deed.
Three months ago, there was a beautiful celebration of Don’s 90th birthday made possible by the loving care and support of everyone in his “Village”.
Don’s parents, Lucy and Robert P. Uhl joyfully welcomed him into this world on March 4, 1934. Robert’s mentoring of his son set the tone for the wonderful father he would become.
Don graduated from Great Neck High School in 1952. The reunions were much enjoyed by him and helped him stay connected with an important part of his life.
Don went on to Brown University which his dad had also attended, and where he met the mother of his children, Priscilla Brewster.
He graduated in 1956 and they were married in June.
In 1957 he began his military career. As an Air Force officer, he served at Montauk Point, NY, Souix Lookout, Canada, Oklahoma City, at the University of NH as an AFROTC instructor, in Vietnam at a Tactical Air Control Radar Installation, 326th Air Division at Wheeler Air Force Base, Hawaii and at NORAD Headquarters in Colorado Springs. He served his country bravely, volunteering for duty in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Lt. Col. Donald Uhl concluded his time in the Air Force in January of 1977. He participated in a variety of civilian endeavors. Don, along with his partner and best friend Thomas Phelan, lead a busy entrepreneurial life in Monument, CO.
Don and his business partner Tom Phelan co-founded Woodmoor Country Club Inc. and purchased Woodmoor Country Club, Lake Woodmoor and the “Barn” with the goal of turning it over to the members. The
Members were able to purchase it in 1985.
Theirs was a great friendship and partnership that embarked on many ventures including creating the Corner Store in Monument, establishing a Real Estate company, Cenacle, building a condominium building in Breckenridge, and founding an oil and gas company that was publicly traded.
In 1978 the most influential town “Mothers” prevailed upon him to run for Mayor of Monument and said they would be his campaign managers. He won handily and ran unopposed for a second term.
The town was a much-improved place to live after his four years as its leader. He oversaw the building of a new Town Hall, refurbishing of town parks, arranged for better maintenance of the Town Cemetery, re-established the Fourth of July Parade, was Chairman of the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments, Member of the Governor’s Front Range Policy Committee, and was instrumental in creating the Tri Lakes Chamber of Commerce. Don Loved Monument and was so interested in its future.
Don is survived by his sister Linda Gobbi, his daughters Linda Dremstedt, her husband Mark, and Carol Barber-Terkhorn and her husband Robert Terkhorn, the mother of his daughters Priscilla Brewster Gill, his two grandchildren Linda Kathleen Barber (Katy), and Daniel Brewster Barber and his wife Hillary Maxson Barber, his great grandchildren Sloane Mikki Barber and Scout Robert Barber, his nephew Kevin Gobbi and his wife Karen Lindler Gobbi, his niece Lucy Gobbi Costa and her husband Jack Costa, his grandnieces Morgan Gobbi Wade and her husband Conner Wade and their daughter Gracie Rose Wade, Erin Gobbi Hair and Husband Darian and numerous Babcock and Uhl Cousins.
