Donna and Sonny proved thru the years to family and friends, the true meaning of love and life, thick and thin, sickness and health, till death do us apart. Sonny took the vow "till death do us apart" to a whole new meaning. There was nothing in this world that he wouldn't do for Donna. These two were truly sole mates. They had both been blessed with finding the love of their lives. Married at the little church around the corner on July 3rd, 1958. Soon the USAF flew them to Japan, where the had their 1st bundle of joy, Pamela. Five years later came an unexpected trip to the Philippines where they had twins, Nina and Tommy.
Donna took the kids and showed them off everywhere. You would of thought. They were the first set of twins born in America, like the doting mother that she was! so the family had expanded to five not having animal planet back then or even a zoo, it was soon discover how a Momma bear protects her cubs.
Pammy was out in the driveway one morning and picked up a paper to hand it to the neighbor, She thought Pam was stealing it and made the mistake of slapping Pam. Donna came around the corner chasing her down yelling "don't ever hit my child" and a few more choice words. as she was shaking the front gate Sonny had to come out and pry her away. God love Momma bear.
The family flew back to the states and traveled a lot, seen their way thru many natural disasters from typhoons ,tornadoes, earthquakes and fires. Donna was there thru it all, raising 3 kids, sometimes on her own because Sonny was away overseas. The many antics and trials put Donna through some rough times, Tom was an a accident waiting to happen from trips to the hospital for stitches to his head-twice-part of a finger slammed and left in the door, she came home, it looked like a massacre took place... to Tommy getting knocked out cold from a baseball bat to the head to having is jaw wired shut from diving thru monkeys bars at school... Nina no physical damage to herself just a typical in a jam, all the time kind of girl.
Nina defenetly took a mothers worry to a whole new level and Pammy falling down many stairs in the middle of the night, to sleeping in paint and tracking it thru the house. Not to mention tormenting the twins ona daily basis...
Oh yeah they gave her worries, but Donna got them thru it all. Donna was very close to her mom Ruth and her sister Gerry. They were inseparable if they weren't together, they were on a 3 way phone call talking about something or another.
Donna cherished her Grand kids, Chuckie, Alexa, Zoe, Axl Austin, Nathaniel and Logan. She adore holidays and spoiled them all rotten. Donna couldn't wait for a reason to get the grand kids to the table for making cookies or coloring eggs to arts and crafts. She welcome the sons and daughter-in-laws with open arms into the family, Steve, Heather, Freddy and Anthony... She loved you with all her heart.
Donna especially looked forward to weekends. She couldn't wait to hang out with her best friend Sonny. They were like Siamese twins. joined at the hip. They loved going out to Bingo and hanging out at Danny Slot Country. If you saw one it was guaranteed the other wasn't far away. The Poulos family knew how to party if occupancy said 18 they squeezed in 36. Donna filled their lives with tradition through the years with love and laughter. A gift she passed on was making friends. Donna could chat it up from a bathroom stall, to sitting on a bus, to standing in live at the grocery store. Something her children and grand children inherited was the gift of gab. The ability to make new friends anytime, anywhere.
Donna we are here today, to thank you and let you know, we cherish the moments in our life with you, all the good times and bad. All the years of amazing happiness that you have given to each and every one of us. the dedication to Sonny for being a faithful and loving wife and companion.
They said laughter is a smile that bursts and you smile showered our hearts forever.
Thank You
Nina Martinez
