

Loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Emmanuel J. "Mike" Markakis, 76, of Las Vegas, passed away Dec. 15, 2011. He was born in Greece, and was a 21-year resident of Nevada. Mike came to the United States in the early 1950's, served as a Merchant Marine and settled in New York in 1960, when he married Catherine, his wife of 51 years, whom he had known since childhood. A hardworking, dedicated man, who was successfully self-employed in the food and real estate industries, retired and moved to Las Vegas in 1991. Mike was actively involved with the Greek Orthodox Church, his community, and was a beloved president of the Las Vegas Chapter of the Minoan Cretan Club for many years. He made a positive impact to all and was known for his strength, charm, humor and strong belief in family tradition. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Marika Vakirtzis and Fifi Svarnas. Mike is survived by his wife, Catherine; son, Joseph Markakis; daughters, Anastasia Markakis Kelly and Kiriaki Markakis; brother, John Markakis; and sister, Io Anna Politakis, six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be 5-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, with Trisagion service following. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, both at St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 5300 El Camino Road. Burial will follow at Palm Memorial Park - Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.
