Gary Raymond Halverson

Gary Halverson, 84, of Las Vegas passed peacefully on September 25, 2018 at home surrounded by his wife and family. Gary was born in St. Paul, MN on June 22, 1934, to Raymond Halverson and Aina Jacobson Halverson. At age 15 he left for Montana to work in the logging camps. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952. He served in amphibious reconnaissance during the Korean War and received several commendations. After his military service he and his wife, Sharlene Maydole, moved back to Minnesota where they had their first child, Michael. Two years later they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where they had four more children, Kara (stillborn), Tye, Terri, and Rock. Gary joined the Sheet Metal Apprenticeship Program. In 1967 he opened Southwest Air Conditioning which is still operating as a family business today. Gary served as the President of SMACNA and on several committees including the National Energy Commission. During this time, his marriage ended. On October 15, 1977, Gary married Cheroyl John for time and all eternity in the Manti Temple. At this time, he adopted and was sealed to her two children Tonya and James. They have been happily married for 41 years living and serving in the Las Vegas area.

Gary was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in numerous callings including the High Council and several Bishoprics. His most loved positions were serving with the youth. Gary was active in the BSA for many years where he was awarded the Silver Beaver. He also contributed greatly to the building of Camp Stimpson and Camp Potosi youth camps. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Tonya, and 3 infant great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Cheroyl, children Michael, Tye (Rebecca), Terri (John Ulmer), Rock, James, 25 grandchildren, and 46 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Arletta Beatty, Richard Halverson, and Kenneth Wilske. Services will be held October 12th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 3400 W. Charleston Blvd, with the Visitation from 9:30 – 10:30am, and the Funeral Service at 11am. Interment will follow at Palm Northwest Cemetery.
