

GERALD MOFFITT Gerald Max Moffiit, 83, of Las Vegas, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013. He was born Oct. 4, 1929, in Salt Lake City, to Maxwell and Patricia Moffitt. He married his high school sweetheart, Joy Olsen, in the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sept. 15, 1950. He was deployed in 1951 to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of sergeant. Jerry graduated from the University of Utah in 1954 with degrees in fine arts and architecture, and was a member of the Lambda Chi Fraternity. In 1955, he moved to Las Vegas to begin a prolific career in architecture, eventually designing many notable buildings in the Las Vegas Valley some of which include Phase I McCarran International Airport, Southwest Gas, Nathan Adelson Hospice, Las Vegas Water District, Ham Hall on the UNLV Campus, the PE Complex, Beam Hall, and the EPA Building, as well as St. Anne's Catholic Church, Christ Church Episcopal, and the West Charleston Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jerry was very involved in the community as a president of the Las Vegas JayCee's, Musical Arts Workshop and Las Vegas Symphony Society. He was a member of the Desert Chorale for 20 years. Other hobbies included horseback riding, skiing, golf, and following Rebel basketball. He was active in the LDS Church, serving in many capacities including Temple worker. He was preceded in death by his wife, of 59 years, Joy; and his grandson, John Jeremiah Nelson. He is survived by his brother, Warren Moffitt; children, Lesli Nelson (Kyle), Brian Moffitt (Barbara), Tracy Ence (Blayne) and Drew Moffitt (Karin); 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 10:30-11:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, with funeral services following at noon, both at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 9850 Peace Way. Burial to follow at Palm Memorial Park-Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. "Dearest father and grandfather, we miss you greatly, but look forward to a joyful reunion and a chance to hear you sing in a Heavenly choir."
