Nelson, niece Melissa Beckstead, and great-nephews and great-nieces. He was predeceased by his brother Gary and parents Alpha and Lester Nelson.
Growing up in Vallejo, "Case" attended St. Basil's Elementary, St.
Vincent's High (class of 1963) and Solano Jr. College. The friends he made in those school years were a big part of his life, and he stayed in touch with them over the years, attending reunions and other events. It was hard on "Case" whenever he learned about a death of one of his early classmates.
After U.S. Army service from 1965 to 1967, including a year in Vietnam, he graduated from San Jose State College with a BA degree in journalism and advertising. "Case" had a 20-year career in advertising at the San Jose Mercury News, retiring as national auto advertising representative in 2001. He then moved to Pioneer, California , and ran a log home construction business in the Sierras until 2011.
"Case" loved the Catholic Church and had fond memories of the Dominican nuns and priests who impacted his life. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, St. John Neumann Catholic Church Men's Club, and Equestrian Order of The Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Other affiliations included the DAV, American Legion, The Knights of Columbus, VFW and Vietnam Veterans of America.
An avid sports fan, "Case" followed the San Francisco Giants, the old Washington Senators and Boston Red Sox, and belonged to the Society of America Baseball Research. He was a former SF 49ers season ticket holder, followed the San Jose Sharks ice hockey team and loved golfing, especially at Pebble Beach. Reading also was important for "Case," ranging from newspapers and magazines to books, especially biographies and sports material.
