

As a young child she attended Calvary Methodist Church with her grandmother, Hattie Bell Powell who often read her verses from the bible and guided her in the way of the Lord. After accepting Christ as her Lord and savior, Hattie joined the youth ministry and became one of Calvary’s Bible teachers. She remained active in several youth organizations and was an integral part of the church choir. Her church home for many years in Las Vegas was Mountaintop Baptist Church.
As a teenager Hattie spent time with friends swimming at the YMCA or roller skating with her friends at the Ritz Roller Rink in downtown Cincinnati. She will forever be remembered for her generosity, trademark sense of humor and beautiful smile.
After graduating from Withrow High School in 1963 she relocated to Chicago, Illinois where she met and married Lloyd Cheatham. From this union two children were born; Martha Petty of Las Vegas, Nevada and Kenyetta Smith of Houston, Texas.
Hattie started her professional career with the Chicago Police Department before building a 25-year career with the Chicago Transit Authority. After retiring in 1999 she moved to Las Vegas, and finished her career with the Metro Police Department. It was there she met many wonderful people and several close friends.
Hattie is survived by two daughters, Martha Petty of Las Vegas Nevada and Kenyetta Smith of Porter, Texas; five sisters, Theresa Luke, Yolanda Johnson and Cassandra Sims of Chicago, Illinois; Sharon Hicks and Diana Sherer of Las Vegas, Nevada. She will be remembered by her devoted brothers Joseph Peterson, Johnny Peterson and Ronald Brooks of Ohio. She has five grandchildren, Shelby, Savannah and Sean Smith of Porter, Texas, Jade Cheatham and Elijah Williams of Las Vegas, Nevada and great-grand child Chloe Cheatham of Las Vegas. She was preceded in death by sister, Tina Hicks and brother, Mackinel Peterson.
Hattie Bell Peterson, 65, went home to be in the presence of the Lord on Sunday, August 28, 2011. She now can rest in peace.
