Herbert Theodore Sasan was born in Oahu, Hawaii on December 11, 1953. He lived with his Grandma and Grandpa Sasan until he was 10 years old. Herbie often recalled as a young boy in Hawaii fond memories of walking around barefoot, climbing trees all day long and eating the fruit off of the numerous trees on the island. Herbie was very fond of his Uncle Pete who taught him how to cook, how to swim in the ocean and how to fish. Uncle Pete’s house was one of the many places Herbie would climb trees and eat the fruit off of the papaya trees.
In 1963, at the age of 10, he moved to California with his mom and dad and family, where they eventually lived in their long time home in Santa Ana. He attended Madison Elementary School and Lathrop Junior High School. In 1971 Herbie graduated from Santa Ana High School. While in High School, Herbie obtained his first job at Al’s as a cook flipping burgers, further enhancing his already flourishing cooking skills. While working at Al’s, Herbie met Bill Medley from the Righteous Brothers at the drive thru. Shortly after working at Al’s, Herbie acquired a job at Prindle Sails assisting in the manufacturing and racing of the catamarans that were custom built in the shop. This job allowed him to travel to numerous places to race the catamarans.
In 1988, Herbie left Santa Ana to move to Lake Tahoe in order to live with Aunty Hazel and Uncle John. Herbie thought of Aunty Hazel as a second mom. He worked at Harrah’s in slots. A year later in 1990 Herbie found himself in Las Vegas working at The Mirage where he met Marta “the prettiest girl in Las Vegas.” Herbie would date Marta for another 6 years before they were finally married on March 1, 1996. Herbie continued to work in the major casinos as he stayed at The Mirage until 2005, and continued to work at The Wynn/Encore from 2005-September 2020 as slot shift supervisor. After retiring from the Wynn/Encore, Herbie couldn’t stay still. He worked in Landscape with his friend Sal for a short time before working part time as an OSHA safety coordinator with Harbauer Framing.
Herbie loved music, singing, sailing, fishing, surfing, cooking for people, and unfortunately the Dallas Cowboys.
Herbie is survived by his beloved wife Marta, his brothers Gregg, Yancy, and Edward, his sisters Sharon and Trisha, his children Carolee, Eli, Angela, Brandy and William, his grandchildren Dallas, Hunter, Cadence, Cooper TJ, John, Jessica, Alysyn and Dylan, and his great grandchildren Benson, Forest, Layla, Tommy, Roman and Bo.
Herbie had a lot of love in his big heart. He could love anyone. Blood was not important to Herbie when it came to love.
Herbie passed away on September 15, 2022. He will be fondly missed by everyone who knows and loves him.
