Herman McKever Pegues, Sr. of North Las Vegas, Nevada was called to rest in heaven on Thursday, January 4, 2018. Herman peacefully passed at home surrounded by his loving family. Herman was born October 8, 1936 in Chesterfield, SC to his mother, Mattie Pegues. He was raised by his grandmother, Prudence Pegues, and grandfather, Alexander Pegues in Morven, North Carolina where he attended Morven Elementary School. He later attended Cromwell Junior High School in Washington D.C, and Jamaica High School in Queens New York. After high school, Herman enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was then stationed in Savannah, Georgia, where he met and married the love of his life, Mildred Leola Young on April 13, 1957. To their union four children were born; three sons, Herman M. Pegues, Jr., Alexander Pegues, Emory D. Pegues, and one daughter, Yvonne Jené Jackson.
Herman and his family were blessed to travel throughout their lives together as part of his military commitment.
Herman was stationed at a total of 13 military bases including overseas in Greenland, Korea, Guam and Rota, Spain. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the Vietnam War, and after 30 dedicated years of honorable service he retired from the Air Force in 1985. He loved this country, and appreciated the exposure to the world that life in the U.S. Air Force provided to him and his family. In 2004, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service after working another 15 years.
Herman frequently referred to his wife Mildred as his sweetheart, honey, his one and only, and often commented that he could not have made it in this life without her. In his leisure Herman enjoyed playing golf and watching sports, but his favorite pastime was spending time with his family. He and his wife were proud members of St. John Neumann Catholic Church because faith was important to them both.
Herman leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 60 years, Mildred, his four children and their spouses, Herman, Jr. (Stephanie), Alexander, Emory, (Birgitte), and Yvonne Jené, and his 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, of which he had a relationship will all of them (Jermaine Pegues, Regina (Pegues) Galloway and Gregory Galloway, Angelina (Pegues) Pineda and Ryne Pineda, Michelle (Pegues) Durdahl and Lee Durdahl , Quentin Pegues, Jenevieve Roper, Byron Pegues, Loren Jackson, Anastacia Pegues, Leea Jackson, Kristina Pegues, Alicia Pegues, Enhri Pegues and Emani Pegues; his 7 great grandchildren (Lisette Dransfield, Tiana Galloway , Avirey Durdahl, Brooke Lynn Galloway, Blake Durdahl, Damian Pegues, and Addison Pineda). He also leaves to treasure his memory his close brother-in-law, Leo Young, Sr., and countless numbers of loving friends and family. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Alexander Pegues, his grandmother Prudence Pegues, his mother, Mattie Ruth Pegues Hayes, his close brother-in-laws Lawrence Williams and James Young, his close uncle Wilton Williams, and brother William Dalton Hayes.
Herman was affectionally known as “Papa” by his grand and great-grandchildren, as “Chief” by those in the military, or “Mr. P” by family friends. Over the last few years, Pegues family and friends call ourselves “Team Papa”. And we’ll always be Team Papa. He was truly an amazing man, husband, father, grandfather, leader, and a true patriot. He will be missed dearly.
