John L. "Jack" Hanes, businessman and 56-year resident of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully Jan. 20, 2011, with his wife by his side. Jack was born July 13, 1925, in Buffalo, N.Y., the only child of Eileen and Clayton Hanes. He attended school in Buffalo, and on his 18th birthday, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served throughout the Pacific and along the coast of China and Japan during the occupation. His first destroyer was sunk October 1944 by Japanese torpedoes off New Guinea. He was honorably discharged April 1946 as a torpedoman's mate second class. Jack returned to Buffalo, became an accomplished salesman, breaking all sales records in western New York when employed by the A.B. Dick Co. In 1954, he transferred to Las Vegas as manager of the company, again setting national sales records. He opened Hanes Printing Co. in 1956 in a small office on Colorado St. Because of his diligence, reliability and honesty, he bought property and built a building to accommodate his growing business, which stood for 50 years. In 1963, Jack merged with Thomas Printing Co. This gave him more time to travel and play golf. He loved sports, especially the Buffalo Bills, fishing of any kind and had mastered fly fishing as a kid. He owned vacation homes in southern California and Pinehurst, N.C. He was a member of Desert Inn Country Club, Pinehurst Country Club, Jaycees, Rotary Club, Elks, a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriners and Jesters. He retired in 1991 to begin another hobby, investing in the stock market. He retained his great memory for facts and memorabilia. He leaves his wife, of 40 years, Deanna Cram Hanes; aunt, Fay Hoppe of Buffalo; cousins, Wayne Koehler and Merle Schillo of Corpus Christie, Texas; his wife's family; and a host of wonderful, loving friends, all of whom will miss this unique and personable man. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, both at Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shriners Children's Hospital or Nathan Adelson Hospice.
