James was born on July 27, 1942, in Kansas City, Missouri to Charles and Francis Fraas. After graduating from De La Salle Academy, he enlisted in the United States Air Force as an early-warning RADAR Technician. He later served as a USAF reservist C-130 Loadmaster, accumulating over 3,500 flight hours, and continued his service as a USAF civil servant, retiring from both with honor. While living in Colorado, he also volunteered for many years as a firefighter and EMT. After retirement, James moved to Nevada to be close to his children.
James had a lifelong passion for flying, history, woodworking, model making, and caring for his pets. A true patriot, he was well regarded by all—known for being generous, kind-hearted, and blessed with a great sense of humor.
He is survived by his son James Fraas Jr. and daughter-in-law Cristine; son Christopher Fraas and daughter-in-law Patti; granddaughter Elizabeth Hanson and husband Alexy Castro; brothers Charles Fraas, Phillip Fraas, and sister Eleanor Gregg.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Nathan Adelson Palliative Care Team and the Sidewinder Family at Nevada State Veterans Home for their compassionate care.
A service for James Fraas will be held at 12:00 p.m. (PST) on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, NV 89005.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jim’s name to the Gary Sinise Foundation at www.garysinisefoundation.org.
James lived in Las Vegas, Nevada.
