

James was raised in a christian home alongside his two siblings Tracy and Charles both of whom preceded him in death. James accepted
Christ at an early age and joined the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Sterling, Virginia.
After graduating from Douglas High School, he graduated from Virginia State University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting. While attending college he was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and remained a proud member throughout his lifetime.
James later joined the US Airforce and obtained a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Ball State University. He also taught college accounting to American Soldiers in Zaragoza, Spain where he was stationed.
James proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for twentyone years, honorably retiring as a military officer, rank, major.
After retiring from the US Air Force, he retired a second time from the City of Henderson Police Department as Jail Administrator.
James married his lovely wife Verma L. Hogan in 1988. After their retirement he enjoyed traveling on cruises with his wife and hosting gatherings with family and friends among other activities.
He was the proud father of two daughters, Michelle Rae Anderson, and Stephanie Hogan from a previous marriage. He was the proud stepfather of Cedric Mitchell Sr, and Thelma McAlister and proud step grandfather of Cedric Mitchell Jr. and Acacia McAlister. He lovingly treated his stepchildren and step grandchildren as his own.
James was a dedicated friend and family man, well known for his sharp and brilliant mind and his take-charge attitude. He was known by some as the information magnet!
James was a believer in Christ. Whenever he spoke with a friend about an unpleasant situation that they were dealing with, his last words would be, I will be praying for you.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Verma L. Hogan, two daughters Michelle Rae Anderson (Kante), and Stephanie Hogan, two step children Cedric Mitchell Sr., and Thelma McAlister, two step grandchildren Cedric Mitchell Jr. and Acacia McAlister, one aunt, Bertie Jean Brooks, three nieces, Tammie Crank (Terry), Rosita Compton, and Marcia Compton, four nephews, Kenneth Compton, Kirk Holland, Kirby Holland and Deontay Compton, , special neighbors Elizabeth and Flemming Moses, Calvin an Doctor Rhonda Jewellege and the Richardo Nevarez family, a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Church, 1240 W Adams Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89106, US, on June 25, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by the Funeral at the same location on June 25, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Burial will take place at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Mem, Boulder City, NV 89005, US, on June 26, 2026, from 9:20 am to 9:50 am.
