Jane Cooper Skinner was born January 23, 1937 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to William and Beatrice Cooper. While residing in Vicksburg, Jane attended Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church serving as Church Secretary and Adult Sunday School Teacher. She also founded the Vicksburg Versatile Civic and Social Club.
Jane relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1978 and joined the Second Baptist Church Family. She was a graduate of the Second Baptist Church School of Evangelism, served numerous years as a Vacation Bible School Kindergarten Teacher, was a member of the Deaconess Ministry, served as a speaker at the Women’s Retreats, was a faithful member of Sunday School Class #2 and loved her Monday and Thursday sweet hour of prayer with the Prayer Ministry.
Jane attended Mary Holmes College in Westpoint, Mississippi, Jackson State University and received her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from University of Nevada Las Vegas. She amassed over Forty years working in Early Childhood Education as a Teacher at Mississippi Action for Progress (MAP), Master Teacher Coordinator and Center Specialist at the Economic Opportunity Board (EOB) of Clark County. After retiring from EOB, she continued her work mentoring newly hired Teachers in the Clark County School District’s Foster Grandparent Program.
Jane was preceded in death by her devoted husband of eighteen years, Charles Skinner, her loving parents, William and Beatrice Cooper, sisters, Alma Cooper (John) Berry and Iris Katie Cooper, brother Eddie Buster Cooper, grandson Bradley Shelby, granddaughter Darnisha James, sons-in-law Ronnie Craft and Anthony Peters, sisters-in-law Hazel Cooper and Elsie LaVerne Cooper.
Jane leaves to cherish her memories, six daughters, Janice Shelby, Beatrice (Odell) Nichols, Marisa Jackson, Melba Peters, Aleta (Daniel) Johnson and Alethea (James) Craft. Three brothers, Willie Cooper, Cornelius (Charlene) Cooper and George Cooper. Jane also leaves seven additional children she dearly loved and helped raise; Sharon Ratliff, Sheila Williams, Leon Williams, Jr., Evan (Faye) Johnson, Carla Charleston, Mareisia Malone and Yvonne (Clovis) Sims. Nine grandsons; Romoane Shelby, Hansel Jones, Jarvis Jones, Phillip (Stacey) Jackson, Jason Jackson, David Lewis, III, Marlo Williams, Lamar Craft and Ronnie (Karina) Craft, Jr. Eight granddaughters; Monica Ramsey, Gina Jackson, Adrienne Jackson, Olivia Davis, Veronica Davis, Asia Parks, Wendy (Allen) Shelton and Ashley (David) Edmonds, thirty-four great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, two special nieces, Falesha (Melvin) Hill and, Dr. Iris Charlene Saulsberry, lifelong special friend Mrs. Beulah (Roy) Caison and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
A visitation for Jane will be held Thursday, February 22, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Second Baptist Church, 500 Madison Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89106. A funeral service will occur Thursday, February 22, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 500 Madison Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89106. A committal service will occur Thursday, February 22, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Palm Downtown Cemetery, 1325 North Main St, Las Vegas, NV 89101.
