Jessie Lecredia Hunter, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend was born on May 28, 1935 in Lillington, North Carolina to the late James Elliott and Eunice Tanksley. She entered God’s most perfect rest on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the blessed age of 88.
At an early age, she developed a passion for cooking and that led to her career as a Director of Food Service for both the military and for the Highland Falls school District. People would come from all over just to have some of Mama’s food. As a proud military spouse and mother, she traveled the world extensively and found joy in her later years visiting her friends and family across the country.
Known for her exquisite taste in clothing and jewelry, she was always sure to be a showstopper anytime she entered a room. She embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity that could be seen in her love and care for her family and friends. Affectionately known as Mama J or Aunt Jessie, she was deeply loved by everyone who was blessed to meet her and welcomed many into her heart throughout the years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, James Hunter, her sister, Ophelia Elliott, and one granddaughter, Jessica Brown.
Left to cherish her wonderful memories, she leaves five daughters, Cassandra Russell, of Las Vegas, Claudia Williams of Columbus, Georgia, Valencia Moore, Renee Chatman (John) of Las Vegas, and Cheryl Brown (Reggie) of Lacey, Washington; one son, Michael Hunter of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren, Kyjuane Chatman, Tomeka Lockett, Chequanta Roberson, Charmia Arinze, Natasia Moore, Christopher Chatman and Jerron Brown; one son and daughter in love, James Hunter and Alissa Russell (Todd) ; one sister, Beulah Harris (Amon); a cherished sister in law, Jean Jackson (Jack); her two best friends, referred to as the Golden Girls, Betty and Jenell; eight great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service for Jessie will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Palm Northwest Mortuary, 6701 North Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131.
