Joeleetta "Joely" Valentine, 55, passed away recently in Las Vegas, Nevada after a battle with cancer.
Born in 1970 in Indianapolis, Indiana and growing up in Wahpeton, North Dakota, Joely was a being of formidable intelligence and steady, resounding, convictions. She was a lifelong learner who earned a political science degree from the University of Minnesota, her Juris Doctor from the William Mitchell College of Law and an MBA from the University of St. Thomas, finally getting an Associated Degree in Computer Forensics. She spent her career at the intersection of law and technology, working as an eDiscovery attorney and then as a database administrator. She enjoyed working at nonprofits like Hennepin Healthcare as a way of giving back. Joely had a gift for seeing the small details, making her a trusted friend and a warm confidante for everyone in her circle. She loved to laugh and her laughter lifted the room, making all one's problems and worries a bit lighter, if only for a moment.
Beyond her professional life, Joely was defined by a deep-seated kindness and a commitment to the things she loved. A dedicated vegetarian, her choices were rooted in a genuine care for animals. This was most evident in her devotion to her three dogs—Dory, Morticia, and Gomez—who were her constant shadows. She was a fixture in her neighborhood, known for her quiet generosity, which often took the form of legendary Christmas treat bags hand-delivered to all of her neighbors.
Joely found joy in the world of Middle Earth that JRR Tolkien built and in the energy of live music, frequently attending shows by artists like U2, Duran Duran, and Nine Inch Nails. She loved art, movies, and travel, and watching the mountains from a distance-she adored the beauty of nature, but would much rather view it from the window of a hotel room. She loved Liberace and Andy Warhol. When she was well, she often supported her local community by acting as an election judge and donating to local animal charities.
For over sixteen years, Joely was the heart of her home and the best friend of her husband, Chad. Together, they were a dedicated team, navigating everything from the small intricacies of home ownership to the biggest challenges of life with a shared sense of humor and devotion. She was generous with her time and attention, and made friends slowly but deeply.
Joely was known for being a great host and caretaker, and always ensured her loved ones were doted on and felt welcomed. She was fierce, she was sharp, and she was beautiful.
She fought bravely, and she fought long, before she finally sailed into the West. She is cherished and missed terribly.
Joely is preceded in death by her mother, Ethel, and her sister JaKimba. She is survived by her husband, Chad Valentine; her father, Joe Macheel; her sisters, Jacinta, Javinya; her niece, Xyola; her Aunt Susie and Uncle Jay; her beloved cousin Brenna (Martin) Joyce, and her beloved dogs.
