John Richard Funk, 69, of Las Vegas, passed away Oct. 13, 2010. He was born Jan. 28, 1941, in Monongalia County, W.Va., and was a 20-year resident of Nevada. John served as a policeman in the U.S. Army. He worked at the Nevada Test Site for 20 years as a welder, carpenter, supervisor. He was an advocate for Nevada Test Site workers and his non-profit group "Atomic Veterans and Victims of America" helped families filing claims for workers who died at the Nevada Test Site. He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Funk; mother, Tressa Benus; and brothers, William L. Funk and Paul Foley. John is survived by his sister, Margaret Barry; nieces, Toni Mattio, Linda Armes, Wendy Young and Mary Julian; and sister-in-law, Bernadine Foley. Services will be at 11:20 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd. in Boulder City. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "John was there for you no matter what you needed."
