Joe was born August 9, 1941 in Flint, Michigan to Peter and Caroline Lary. He was the eldest of three sons (Joe, Paul and Peter) and they grew up surrounded by a large Italian family and thrived on the love and traditions that were brought to America from Sicily and Bari, Italy. Dear folks of other cultures also married into the family, adding to its richness.
Joe attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Flint, and maintained lifelong close friendships with his classmates. He never forgot Sacred Heart’s Father Bell and the Dominican sisters who taught him. He donated to their order his entire life.
In 1959 Joe’s family relocated to Escondido, California. Joe then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he had a 30+ year career at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), then designated as the Nevada Test Site (NTS). During his years there, he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from UNLV.
He accepted employment with the Clark County School District where he remained until retirement. In his early twenties, Joe served in the U. S. Army in Vietnam and was a proud veteran.
The birth of daughter Cara in 1971 brought life changing joy to Joe and Lois. Joe cherished his family and friends and was the happiest in their company. After his father passed away, Joe helped his mother eventually relocate to Las Vegas where he took care of her until her passing. He was a devoted son and father. He loved his brothers dearly. He remained close to his ex-wife Lois until his death.
Above all, Joe was God’s loyal servant his entire life and practiced the Catholic Faith he loved. He was a Eucharistic Minister; visited the sick and dying; taught Catechism for decades; and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was always available to help the many priests he knew.
Joe was predeceased by his mother and father; many dear relatives and friends of that “greatest generation” and earlier; many of his generation; and his loving nephew Peter Lary and sister-in-law Donna Lary; He is survived by his beloved daughter Cara Maria Lary and her mother Lois Spalding; his brothers Paul Lary and Peter Lary (Gail); niece Mia Lary; Nephew Joseph Alliyani (Carolyn); Aunts Antoinette Farella; Kit Cusenza; Patty Cusenza; and many close cousins.
