Mrs. Ashiedu Josephine Nwuli was born 83 years ago in Nigeria into a devout Christian household rooted deeply in faith and service. Both her parents were respected leaders within their church and community, and from an early age, Mama Nwuli was immersed in a life shaped by spiritual devotion, humility, and a love for humanity.
She was not just a mother but a matriarch - the heartbeat of our family - whose life was a living sermon of grace, discipline, and unshakable belief in God's purpose. The Ten Commandments were more than biblical teachings to her; they were a compass. Her favorite commandment, "Love thy neighbor as thyself," was not just quoted - she lived it every day through acts of kindness, forgiveness, and hospitality.
She fasted every Friday without fail, regardless of season or circumstance. Her home was often filled with the sound of her singing gospel hymns, sometimes with tears in her eyes, her voice a beacon of peace and strength. As children, we memorized scripture not just from church but from hearing her whisper them while cooking, cleaning, or simply walking the halls of our home.
Life, she taught us, would come with burdens - but never ones God wouldn't carry with us. Her response to hardship was always the same: prayer, patience, and praise.
Even in modest means, she was generous to a fault. In Nigeria, she led weekend efforts to feed the homeless, cooking large pots of food with her children by her side. When she moved to America, she continued this tradition - now with her grandchildren - preparing meals to share with those in need, teaching them the joy of giving and the dignity of every soul.
She was a fierce protector of her children and grandchildren - our "Mama Bear" - who wielded prayer like a sword and faith like armor. Her words were wise, her hugs healing, and her laughter, when it came, full and rare - a sacred sound.
She is survived by her children, sixteen grandchildren, and one great-grandson - all of whom carry pieces of her strength, love, and enduring spirit.
To know Mrs. Nwuli was to witness a life lived in obedience to God and in service to others. She was our mother, our guide, our warrior of faith.
May her soul rest peacefully in the loving arms of the Almighty she trusted so completely.
