The family announces the passing of Karen Kay (K.K.) Mulawski, age 81, of North Las Vegas, Nevada. Born in Sumner, IA, the eldest of her siblings, Karen took on the role of caretaker from an early age while excelling in her studies, graduating as valedictorian of her high school class. She went on to attend the University of Iowa and began her career as a medical technologist at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, where she married and welcomed two children into the world. She later returned to the University of Iowa, earned a Master's degree, and went on to a career with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where she was, in every sense of the word, a dedicated public servant.
After moving to Massachusetts, she met Daniel Mulawski, and the two were married in June of 1991. Together they made their way from Massachusetts to California, and ultimately settled in North Las Vegas, Nevada, to be near their children and grandchildren. Her family was her greatest pride and joy.
Her love of music was a constant thread woven throughout her life. She played the piano and organ for church services and lent her voice to community choirs over the years. She was an avid traveler who delighted in discovering the world, creating cherished memories with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Alice Kirchhoff; her first husband, Gary Blomberg; her sister, Jackie Kirchhoff; her brothers-in-law, Steven Baumgarn and Charles Listenbee; and her sisters-in-law, Becky Kirchhoff and Netty Kirchhoff.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel Mulawski; her son, Lars (Kimberly) Blomberg; her daughter, Alyssa (Thomas) Rohnkohl; six grandchildren, Zachary Blomberg, Gavin Watson, Cade Rohnkohl, Abigail Johnson, Jesse Powell, and Sarah Powell Reade; one great-grandchild, Danae Johnson Covington; four sisters, Ann Baumgarn, Patty Listenbee, Jane (Charlie) Burleson, and Barb (Duane) Senft; her brother, Richard Kirchhoff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her presence will be felt in every family gathering, every note of music, and every act of quiet service that carries her spirit forward.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to PBS or the National Park Foundation.
