Lavern Lee Jones, daughter of the late Eddie W. Wilson and the late Ernestine M. Wilson, transitioned to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on October 3, 1949, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Lavern's life was a testament to love, faith, and selflessness, a beacon of light that will forever shine in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
From a young age, Lavern embodied a spirit of generosity and compassion that marked her entire life. Lavern grew up with her siblings on two and a half acres in the country, in Fresno, CA. She enjoyed growing and eating fresh vegetables from the "children's garden" and partaking of the fresh fruit from the many fruit trees on the property. She loved western TV shows while growing up, and still enjoyed watching Gunsmoke, The Virginian, and many western shows with her family throughout her life. She was a country girl at heart. She lived by the principle that true happiness comes from lifting others up. Lavern's commitment to selflessness was a reflection of her unwavering faith in the Lord; she believed that by being a source of support and encouragement to others, she was fulfilling her purpose.
Lavern had a remarkable gift for creating connections. Her friendships were deep and meaningful, and she often expressed her gratitude through acts of kindness always putting the needs of others before her own. She had a unique ability to see the potential in everyone, encouraging those around her to strive for their best. She found joy in being a source of strength during their darkest hours, demonstrating a God-like love that knew no bounds. Her home was often a gathering place where neighbors felt welcomed and valued. She had an uncanny ability to create a sense of belonging, often enveloping those around her with love and warmth. Many of the young men in the neighborhood regarded her as a second mother, her “adopted sons,” as she affectionately called them. To them, she was a source of encouragement, always ready with words of wisdom and a listening ear. Lavern believed wholeheartedly in the potential of every individual, openly celebrating their accomplishments and encouraging them during challenging times. She embodied the essence of community care; her support transcended familial boundaries, ensuring that everyone felt seen, heard, and cherished.
The strength of Lavern's faith in God was perhaps the most defining aspect of her character. She lived her life as a testament to her beliefs, firmly convinced that there is goodness in each person. Lavern often quoted scriptures that emphasized love and kindness, viewing them not just as guiding principles but as an essential way of life. Her unwavering faith allowed her to look beyond surface traits and circumstances, seeing the divine spark within everyone she encountered. This belief inspired her to reach out to those in need, whether through a simple act of kindness or a heartfelt conversation that could uplift someone’s spirits.
Her faith in God also shaped her perspective on adversity. Especially when faced with the daunting task of dialysis. She understood that challenges were opportunities for growth and transformation, both for herself and others. Lavern could often be found praying for her family, friends, and the neighborhood, believing that her prayers would invoke a positive change in their lives. She viewed each person’s struggles as reflective of their journey, knowing that God had a purpose for everyone. This understanding helped her foster deep connections with those around her, bridging the gaps that often divide communities.
Her love extended profoundly to her family. She embraced her role as a mother selflessly, dedicating herself to caring for her children, Elijah and Mark, and nurturing the special bond she shared with Rene and Gerald. Lavern was not just a caregiver, she was a fierce advocate. When her own child, Elijah, was born with a disability, she did not shrink back; instead, she rose to the occasion. Alongside her beloved sister Lorraine, she navigated the challenges of the disability arena with grace and perseverance, proudly celebrating the unique gifts each of her children brought into the world. Their shared experiences fortified an unbreakable bond steeped in love and mutual understanding.
Lavern's strength was palpable, evident in how she approached life. Her favorite scriptures from Psalms 91 and 23 were not merely verses to her; they were the foundation of her unwavering faith. She clung to these promises in times of trial and encouragement, living each day grounded in the belief that love—both from God and from those around her was the most powerful force of all.
Throughout her life, Lavern's selflessness shined brightest in her support for others. Whether it was cheering for her niece, Crystal, or extending her hands to help anyone in need, Lavern's heart was always open. Her legacy is one of kindness, resilience, and unwavering faith, a genuine example of how to live out a life reflecting the love of Christ.
Lavern leaves behind not only cherished memories but also an enduring legacy of love for her children: Elijah Jones, Mark Jones of Las Vegas, NV, Rene Cain and Gerald Cain of Vicksburg, MS; her brothers: Rudy Wilson of Las Vegas, NV, Anthony Wilson, and Raymond Washington of Vicksburg, MS; her sisters: Agnes Wilson and Lorraine (Clifton) Marshall of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a multitude of family and friends who were touched by her graceful spirit.
As we gather to celebrate the life of Lavern Lee Jones, let us remember her incredible selflessness, her profound faith, and the loving light she brought into our lives. May we honor her memory by carrying forward the essence of her beautiful spirit, striving to share that same God like love she so freely gave to others.
