Mark “Corky Devil Doc” Edward Fontaine, HMC (FMF) July 9, 1949 – October 1, 2023. Corky was born in Cloquet MN to Dorothy (Dody) and Theodore (Teddy) Fontaine. He was second in a line of five siblings. They moved to Nebraska before finally settling in Duluth Minnesota. He graduated from Duluth Cathedral High School, class of 1967.
Corky had an innate wanderlust leading him to join the Navy at the age of 17. He was a proud Combat Corpsman in Vietnam, spent time in Diego Garcia, Guam, The Philippine Islands and Spain. After his 25 years of Navy service, he worked for OSHA in Madison, Wisconsin and for Clark County in Las Vegas, Nevada. Corky found freedom and adventure in his love for travel. In his retirement, he bought a motorcycle and became a member of the Las Vegas Chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association whose motto is “Vets helping Vets”. He teamed up with some of his CVMA family and traveled the United States, visiting national parks, friends and family by RV and motorcycle.
Above all, Cork loved his family. There was a strong, loving bond between his siblings, and this love and devotion is woven throughout the Fontaine Family. He brought a subtle sense of humor, and a talent for storytelling. He could explain History, Politics, Science and Philosophy in such a way that would leave us clamoring for more. By nature, he was quiet, humble, introverted and private. Ironically, people were drawn to him like a magnet, and loved being around him. Corky waxed philosophical and learned, but he also found humor in life’s complexities and in his own cynicism with his last request being, “Bury me face down so the whole world can kiss my ass.”
He is preceded in death by his father Theodore (Teddy), mother Dorothy (Dody), brother William (Bill), and stepfather Wilfred (Will) Rosenthal. He is survived by His wife, Rey Charmaine Reyes Fontaine, his children, Wendy Fontaine, Krystel Fontaine and Steven (Hillary) Fontaine. His granddaughter Elara Fontaine. his siblings Linda (Rod) Czerniak, Debra Fontaine and Lori (Skip) Siegle. His nieces and nephews, Micci (David) Hiatt, Amy (Shannon) Moore, Jason (Mandy) Czerniak, Sara Siegle (Josh Hall) Tedi (Neill) Jerry, Christine Jacobs, Neil (Carrie) Fontaine, Joe (Leslie) Fontaine, and Deana (Jesse) Gregorich as well as many great nieces and nephews who loved and adored him. He will also be missed by his granddogs Sadie the Husky, Penny the Mutt, Charlie Archer the Chihuahua, and Bella the Shih Tzu.
Corky’s inurnment will take place at 2:00 pm on December 5, 2023, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, Nevada 89005.
