Beloved Father & Husband was taken by the Lord in Las Vegas, NV, Sunday at 8:08pm. He passed after a long battle with many complications & a recently discovered cancerous tumor. He suffered for many years, but had a strong will to live. He loved life so much & refused to give up!
He was preceded in death by mother, Helen (Exner) Schlumpf ~ immigrant of Austria & father, Frank Schlumpf, of Switzerland, brothers; Fred, Jack and Bill.
He is survived by his sister; Rosa Grish, Wife; Kathy of 43 years, children; Alena, Anthony, Brian, & Angella, grandchildren; Sydney, Brandon, Rocco (family dog), several cousins, nieces & nephews.
He graduated Fife HS (WA) in 1962, was a varsity letterman & played Baseball, Basketball & Football. Michael then graduated from the University of Washington in 1968 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics.
He served in the Army National Guard & Reserves for a total of 6 years as a Specialist, 4th Class (E-2) as a radio & carrier operator & taught radio classes. (A fellow student claimed that he looked like Clark Kent).
After college, he worked for Boeing in flight test ops then went on to start a long career as a Computer Programmer / Analyst and as he worked in San Francisco and soon moved to Nevada, where he met and married the love of his life (Kathy). He always had a love for numbers and created various slot machine systems for Casinos including Bally’s, Caesars Palace as well as others.
He had many hobbies; he entered and won many seasonal football game score prediction contests. He also enjoyed skiing, coaching Little League baseball, and basketball, swimming in the backyard pool, grilling for family.
Every year for Christmas he looked forward to displaying a magnificent array of holiday lights with critters to make the whole neighborhood smile. Learning more about ancient world history, the universe and life was also a deep passion of his.
Michael was a very supportive and faithful father. He was fond of years he spent as the President of the University of Washington Alumni ~ Las Vegas chapter, he loved watching games with the group, where many loved him.
He was a wonderful man, had a special soul and will be missed dearly!
The funeral service will be Sunday, Jan 17th at Palm Mortuary at 3pm.
