Martin and Chris Holland

I was a patient of Dr. Volgelzang in 2016 with stage 4 cancer.  He was very emphatic that this does not necessarily mean the end is near.  So, I followed his instructions for surgery, chemo and radiation and today, I still have undetectable levels. He literally saved my life. 

I last saw Dr. Volgelzang in January 2022. He was chipper and kind as he always was. 

R.I.P my friend.

When I first saw Dr. Vogelzang I was given very little hope with my cancer diagnosis. The Mayo Clinic told my wife and I to prepare for very painful journey to my death in a few years. I was only 48 at the time. 
Dr. Vogelzang assured me I would see my grandchildren. His optimism was desperately needed. With that hope, his help and grace, I did live to see my first and only grandchild - 24 years later. I now have been undetectable for more than two decades. 
May God grant eternal peace to the man I owe my life to.

I am so sorry to hear this.  He treated my husband a third stage cancer, and he was such amazing person and physician.   He gave our whole family strength.   Our children were young at the time.  He has often been in my thoughts.  I feel very sorry for his family and for the people to whom he can no longer give strength and medical care.  He must have been and incredible husband and father.

I was deeply saddened to only now learn of the death of Dr. Nick Vogelzang. He was a great man and a world-renowned medical oncologist. I consider myself to be very fortunate to have had the privilege of working with Nick and being personal friends with him for nearly 40 years. I will always have the fondest of memories of working with him in the US and in Europe and meeting with him and our Chicago-area friends at our annual Cubs versus Sox baseball game. Nick was always a generous and kind person who touched so many people with his warm personality and smile.  My condolences to Diane and his family. God bless you, Nick. I miss you, my friend. 

Dr. Vogelzang was the greatest physician I have ever known - what every physician should strive to be.  He was an incredible fusion of the highest expertise and genuine compassion.  He was a literal answer to my prayers.

I will forever be grateful for having met Dr. Vogelzang. Not only did he save my dad's life, he did so with a level of compassion that I had never encountered before, and will likely never encounter again. He was a different kind of human.. listening to him talk for a few minutes was enough to be filled with an overwhelming sense of hope. Dr. Vogelzang was the perfect example of what a doctor should be. He saw his patients as real people, with lives and families. He was honest, brilliant and optimistic with the most wonderful bedside manner. It is true that some men find their calling, because he very clearly found his. He was an angel among men; and unfortunately, he was called back home. We will miss you Dr. Vogelzang. We love you.

When my Prostate cancer metastasized to my right lung I was referred to Nick Vogelzang at the University of Chicago Hospitals. He enrolled me in a study undertaken by Walter Stadler. Nine rounds of chemotherapy later my cancer was undetectable and has remained so since September 2002. I counted Nick among my friends and although we spoke infrequently over the years, whenever we did have the chance to catch up our conversations were warm with plans that, unfortunately, we were never able to fulfill. 
Nick Volgelzane helped save my life as he did for so many others.
His loss is great.

We would like to express our sincere condolences to Dr. Vogelzang’s family.  We are so sad to hear of his passing. We can only imagine the sadness they are feeling. The world lost a brilliant doctor and heaven gained an Angel.
We first met Dr. V. in 2013 when he became Martin’s oncologist. He is the reason Martin is still alive today, ten years later. He was always on top of the latest and greatest treatment and he just knew what to do. 
There was a time when we thought we had beaten his cancer and Dr. V. was so happy as were we! We called him our “ROCK STAR!” because that is what he was.
After we moved away, Martin continued to fly down to see him because that’s how good he was.  
I remember how interested he was in everything about Martin and how he included me in the decisions. I really appreciated that. He even gave us his cell phone number in case we had any questions.  
He was so kind and compassionate and will be missed by so many. We will always be grateful for his knowledge, intelligence, kindness and sense of humor.
RIP Dr. Vogelzang. You made a huge impact on our lives and will be deeply missed.
 


 Dr. Vogelzang gave me two gifts....plain and simply he saved my life and incredibly he stopped my wife from crying.   Stopping my wife's tears meant so much,.  What words can convey my gratitude for that gift. My condolences to his family, his staff, his friends  and all of us, his patients.  I can't think of CCC with out him.   I will miss him

In 2012, I was diagnosed with prostate metastatic bone cancer stage 4. I was told to get my affairs in order. My daughter in law survived bone cancer at the age of 15, she referred me to her doctor who referred me to Dr. V. He reviewed all of my issues, looked me square in the eye and asked me if I wanted to live - I said yes. Today, ten years later, I am in remission. I am literally alive today because he saved my life. His knowledge, analytical skills, the daring he had on my behalf and the never ending commitment he had for pulling me through is why  I am here. I have lived to see my son marry, have two darlin' grandchildren and live a rewarding life.  I have recounted this to family and friends, some of which are in medicine, and they could not believe it. Dr. V was a prince among men. He gave me a gift I cannot ever repay. God bless him.

Today is December 13, 2022.  I just found out about Dr. V's death today by an email speaking about a day of remembrance or some damned thing.  The Doc knew me as a combat veteran, a gunner on the rivers of Vietnam.  He is the only man of his stature in my entire world of time on this earth that ever gave a single damn in Hell about what my boys and I endured during multiple volunteer tours in that dark, dark place.  This man who has saved so many lives in his time genuinely comforted those he could not save, gave me hope and renewed confidence to my retched, tortured spirit that even I was worth saving.  He spent the better part of an extended visit one day explaining to me, apologizing to me in some misplaced guilt of why he did not risk his life in that political madness that, to this day, still drives DC and deprives me of any hope of sleep.  

DOC, YOU done your duty.  You done your time on a line of combat that I could never survive.  Yes Sir, I manned those twin '50's on the bow of my PBR, and I killed anything that even remotely posed a threat to me or mine, but YOU, Sir saved so, so many more.  You saved me when all of your current counterparts now look at me like something they just threw in the nearest wastebasket.  I'll be seeing you soon, Doc in another world of hope and light made possible to us both by the baby born in this season of Christmas and the man who sacrificed everything a man can endure for us all some thirty odd years later.      

God willing, I will see you soon, Sir to thank you you for all you did for me and my family.  Fair winds and following seas to you and your family forever and ever.

I had the tremendous privilege of being Dr. V's PA for 4 years. Words cannot express my gratitude for that experience. He was both brilliant and compassionate, qualities which don't often co-exist in one physician. He treated patients like family and got to know them well. I was continually amazed by his ability to recall detailed aspects of his patients' personal lives and stories without ever referring back to his notes.
He truly loved what he did and devoted every ounce of his energy to serving his patients and giving them hope. So many men and women are still walking this earth today because Dr. V would not quit. 
One of the most impactful experiences I had with Dr. V occurred when we were caring for a patient who was an inmate with a very aggressive cancer.  The only treatment with potential to cure his cancer was not available in our state, and the prison system had denied him early release because he was a violent offender. Other providers wrote him off because of his criminal history, but Dr. V was relentless in pursuing every possible avenue for getting him his treatment, including writing letters to the governor. In the end the patient was still denied treatment by the state, but I will never forget the day I watched Dr. V embrace that man with tears pouring down his face and speaking these words: "May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace." 
My eyes fill with tears whenever I think about that day. I have no doubt that Dr. V is home now, resting in peace with the Lord' s face ever shining upon him.




My sincere condolences! I was Dr. Vogelzang’s research student in Las Vegas and currently I am a GI doctor. I owe him a lot in my career development. He was a brilliant, kind and generous to his students and patients. I will always remember him. 

Doctor V was my oncologist for 7 years and was outstanding. Because of his expertise I have survived 13 years since my initial diagnosis. Because of my admiration for him I always brought home made cookies or banana nut bread(his favorite) to my appointments. I regularly sent him emails with jokes and other stuff that he liked. I am sorry that my relationship with him was only professional, as I really liked him and will miss him not only as my doctor, but as some one I felt was my friend. My condolences to his family.

I just want to send my condolences to Dr. Vogelzang's family.  I cannot ever explain how much he helped my dad and me.  My dad had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in California and they chose to do very minimal treatment because he was age 78.  The type he had was pretty aggressive and spread to his bones, causing a lot of pain and anemia, and the morphine with its side effects. He needed to come live with me in Vegas and I had no idea how to help him.  I prayed and just happened to read an article about Dr. Vogelzang leaving the Cancer Institute and going to practice at CCC.  I decided to call and shockingly got an appointment for him! Thank you, Jesus! Dr. V explained that he couldn't cure him but could help him deal with it.  He helped so much! My dad was able to stop the morphine, and live a fairly normal life for another 18 months, long enough to see his twin great grandsons be born.  Dr. V was so respectful to my dad, and me, asking about his WWII service, etc. and just joking around with him.  I can't tell you how much it meant to me and my dad, who passed in 2011.  I hope Dr. V knew how grateful we were.  I sent him a thank you from the family.  His kindness and wisdom, determination, and attitude made all the difference for us.   I am so sorry for your loss of a very beautiful man.  He will be greatly missed.  

Dr V was nothing short of an Amazing and wonderful human being and clinical Oncologist! He will be missed by many!!

You may never know or realize how much Dr. Vogelzang has meant to so very many people whom he helped over the years.  Of course, my husband was one of them and I am still eternally grateful for his  wonderful care and the many extra years he had thanks to him.  Dr. Vogelzang was his oncologist for about 14 years and always went out of his way to find a new treatment or trial that he could participate in.  
Dr. Vogelzang was an exceptionally caring and knowledgeable doctor and his smile was contagious.  He was the very best.  

Dr. V has treated, successfully, both my wife and I. The medication he gave me may caused hair to grow he warned. On my next visit I explained the 10 or more steps I had tried to remove sed hair from a part of my body that was difficult to see. When I finished his head on his desk crying.  On my next visit I gave him my prized lobster hat in hopes he would get a laugh from some one that really needed a good laugh, After that I  always had a deferent wig and we would have a  laugh, the short, old, bald guy and the tall guy with a lobster on his head.  
We were friends, with an inside joke no-one else shared. He can't be replaced him in my hart.

Dr. V was such a blessing to us, I worked with him for 8 years.    I was able to see first hand all the good he has done.  I was able to see how he put his patients first and did everything he could to find them treatments that could work.   He cared not only for his employees, but also their families.  He counseled my son for an hour before he was shipped off to Kuwait.  My son was very saddened to hear of Dr. V's passing.  I am so grateful to have known him and worked so  
 closely with him.  Heaven has gained another angel.  

It is with a great deal of sadness that we write this.  We want his family and friends to know what a tremendous impact he made on our lives.  We moved from the Chicago area to southwest Utah in 2008 and a couple of years later, my prostate cancer reappeared.
We flew back to Chicago and the doctor at Northwestern recommended that we "see Nick."

We then started our journey with Dr. Vogelzang.  At one point he sent me to Mayo for a special scan.  When the doctor found out where we lived they said that we didn't need to come back to Mayo but to "see Nick."

Therefore, he was well respected in the national medical community and we felt secure being in his very capable hands.

His treatment kept me alive for many years.  We will always be grateful for his knowledge, intelligence, kindness and sense of humor.

At one point, I asked him how long he thought I had.  He mimed using a telephone and said, "God, how long does he have?"

We have lost a great man and will always remember and miss him.

What an incredible doctor and human we have lost. The world is dimmer without Dr. Vogelzang in it. My deepest condolences to his beloved family and sincerest thanks as well for so generously sharing this wonderful man with the world.

I was diagnosed in 2016 with stage IV kidney cancer, and there is no way I would be here today if it weren’t for Dr. V. I truly owe my life to him. I have been in remission since 2017 because of him. I trusted him implicitly and knew he had my back. It’s why even after I moved out of Vegas 2 years ago, I still kept driving back to see him. I didn’t trust anyone else.

Dr. V treated his patients as humans at a time when most of us feel so dehumanized. He saw me at my absolute worst and best times of my life and encouraged me to keep going even when I quite frankly didn’t want to anymore. He knew my children’s names and celebrated with me when my oldest graduated high school. He even would take the time to talk with them at my appointments despite his full waiting room. His warm demeanor made it easy for my whole family to trust him.

If he was this wonderful with his patients, I can only imagine how deeply his loss impacts his family and friends. My heart and prayers are with you. I hope it is some small measure of comfort to know that he impacted so many lives. I truly loved and adored him, and I will never be able to adequately express how thankful I am for him and for your family.

Dr. "V " is the reason why I'm here today. I was diagnosed with stage 4 CCRCC that metastasis to my lungs in October 2020. Today I'm in complete remission thanks to Dr. Vogelzang and his expertise.  He was kind hearted, caring,  always had the time for me in my Dr.  visits, expert advise (I never once doubted him in my toughest times with this cancer, I knew this man was the only one that can extend my life).   Dr. Vogelzang will truly be missed.

Dr. Vogelzang.... what an amazing Dr., and man. I truly 100% believe he is why my husband is alive today. i will never forget the day we met him, I could breath and function again, I knew he was the right one, and we were so right. He was brilliant, but also incredibly kind and you knew he really cared about you. He would call when I would be upset about a test result, he never for one second forgot that his "patients' were real people with real families. I didn't shake his hand,I hugged him. My husband and he knew some mutual people in Chicago also as my husband was from there as well, they had also assured us we were in the best hands. We will be eternally  grateful for his amazing care and his wonderful staff. I didn't think we could do this without him, but I believe he did the hard work so Lou will be ok. RIP sweet wonderful man....you changed and saved so many lives you will be remembered forever.

I am a cancer patient who, for the better part of a decade, was a patient of Dr. Vogelzang until his retirement. Over the years, my relationship with Dr. V became much more than a doctor-patient relationship; I considered Dr. V a friend.

Dr. V has kept me alive, moving me from one trial to another as he attempted to rid my body of cancer. I came to look forward to my visits and our chats about wine, his passion, world medical events, and general guy stuff. I learned about his family as he learned about mine meeting my wife and two daughters.

The battle against cancer has lost a true warrior, and his many patients will not forget his contributions to that battle. My RN daughter said it best "Dr. V is a one-of-a-kind cancer doctor, and he leaves enormous shoes to fill."

I truly loved this man! RIP, you fought the good fight!

I was referred to Dr. Vogelzang by a doctor in NE in 2018. He told me that he was a rock star, and it didn't take long for me to understand what he meant and to agree with that assessment. I was under his care until he left the practice, and am glad that he was around to determine and help me through my various treatments. He was such an intelligent person and very friendly. I enjoyed talking to him and having him explain what was going on with my treatment. 
I'm saddened by his passing, and would like his family to know that there are a lot of us walking around that might not be here, if not for him.  

Who could ever forget that amazing joyful smile he gave freely to everyone he met! He gave so much to so many.  He will be missed but never forgotten.

My husband was treated by Dr V for around ten years ..he was amazing.  He always had a new drug, or a new test, or a new idea of how to manage my husbands prostate cancer and he was always optimistic about the positive outcome of each new drug he was researching. 

 One time I emailed him in the middle of the night asking for a stronger pain med for my husband,  assuming I would hear from him in the morning.. He contacted the pharmacy immediately,  arranged for me to pick it up and called and checked on us in the morning .

.He was remarkable as a doctor and a human being.  I am sad the world has lost this wonderful person
