Max moved from Oklahoma to Los Angeles in the 1940s to work in the booming aerospace industry. After years as a sheet metal mechanic at Archie’s Machine Shop he established the small business M & J Metal Crafts, with the support of his wife, the late Joan Adams Maxwell. Throughout his life Max was committed to creating business opportunities for members of the community, especially the disadvantaged and those who traditionally faced discrimination. After decades in business, the successful entrepreneur retired to Las Vegas to be with his wife of 32 years. While in Las Vegas he remained an active member of the Nevada Elks Lodge and the Black Congressional Caucus among other organizations. Max was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; and stepdaughter, Kim Suzanne Neal. He is survived by his daughter, Quet Sledge; son, Bryan Maxwell; granddaughters, Simone Maxwell and Tenisha A. Maxwell; grandsons, Alexei McCall, Cole Maxwell, Terrell A Maxwell and Terrance A. Maxwell; and great grandchildren Imani, Safiya and Charneece Maxwell.
