If you ask a hundred people who Osmundo Lino Closas was, they’d all give different stories. It all depended on what chapter they were in his “Book of Life of Adventures”. Osmundo had the natural talent and personality to make friends no matter the situation, and his laughter was infectious to those around him. He was the family’s comedian always conjuring the best jokes or pranks to lighten our hearts and put smiles on our faces. He continued to exert this mannerism all the way to the last chapters of his life. A man of many words and stories capturing the attention of his audience with lack luster conclusions. Needless to say, he was someone you just can’t help but love.
Osmundo was born on Dec 4, 1939 in General Trias, Cavite, Philippines. Born into a large family, his Parents, Francisco and Esperanza made sure that they were loved unconditionally. He had 7 siblings, Justino, Lolita, Gani, Lourdes, Napolean, Emiliano and Rosalinda. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and often spoke fondly of them. He was taught at an early age that family is invaluable. Osmundo would say “If you have God in your heart and the love of family then you are truly blessed. If you should happen to stumble into some extra money in your pocket, well then that’s a bonus”.
As a young man, Osmundo was itching for some adventure and a way to better himself and his family. Surprising family, friends and even himself he was one of the handful recruited out of hundreds of applicants for the US Navy. Thus began his military career that took him around the world. He sailed the seas and ported to many destinations that he never even dreamed he’d visit. From Brazil, Spain, Italy, Europe and parts of Asia. He was fascinated by all the different foods and cultures. Bonding with shipmates he created lifetime friendships, friends that became his Pare’s, his extended family. The most challenging part about the military for him was the family separation and the Vietnam war.
Osmundo met the love of his life, Denisa aka “Daisy” on one of his trips back home on leave. He was awe stuck and knew that she was his soul mate. On August 24, 1967 they were married and were blessed with four children: Adrian, Linsey, Sheryl and Osmund. Osmundo took on his role as doting husband and father head on. He was gone often as a sailor but always showered his family with extra love, gifts and stories from abroad when he returned. Osmundo’s last duty assignment was in Bremerton, Washington where he eventually retired. The Puget Sound area was perfect for his love of seafood! Osmundo would spend many hours fishing, crabbing, clamming, squiding, harvesting oysters and muscles. He was an excellent cook who embraced his Filipino heritage and would cook up amazing dishes. He was an avid Poker player as well. His poker face fooled many and his skills were on point. Never staying put he loved to take long drives; trips to California and Las Vegas were his favorites.
Uprooting from Washington to Las Vegas to be closer to his grown family was a must. He looked forward to family gatherings and absolutely adored all his grandkids of where he had 13: Heather, Marcus, Michael, Kyle, Triston, Dezjion, Brenden, Frankie, Tricia, Elijah, Evan, Summer and Skye. As well, he has 2 son-in-laws and 2 daughter-in-laws that he loved as his own children: Pedro Perez, Mike Brown, Liza and Starlet.
Sadly his adventures came to an end on Dec 10, 2021. His battle with serious medical issues, in recent years he showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Osmundo came out a hero and stayed strong until the end. Osmundo was truly a great man whose impact will forever be felt by the family that loves him dearly.
Services will be held at Palm Northwest Mortuary in Las Vegas, Nevada.
