June 4, 1946 - September 21, 2026
Paul Peter Semmerling, 80, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on September 21, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime defined by love, generosity, service, hard work, and an unwavering devotion to his family.
Paul was born on June 4, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, to Paul Semmerling Sr. and Wanda (Smalarz) Semmerling. He grew up alongside his siblings, Robert, Patricia, and Dorothy. From an early age, Paul developed the values of family, hard work, responsibility, and helping others - values that remained at the center of his life.
On August 30, 1965, at the age of 19, Paul began his service in the United States Army. He proudly served his country for three years, attaining the rank of Specialist 5 (E-5) before being honorably discharged on August 29, 1968. His military service marked the beginning of what would become a lifetime of service, responsibility, and dedication to others.
Following his time in the Army, Paul began a career with UPS, where his dedication and strong work ethic helped provide for the family he would soon build.
On September 4, 1971, Paul married the love of his life, Donna. Their marriage would span 55 years and become the foundation of the family Paul treasured above everything else. Together, Paul and Donna built a life filled with love, laughter, hard work, sacrifice, and countless memories while raising their four sons, Paul, Daniel, Brian, and Michael.
After a successful career with UPS, Paul retired at the young age of 46. In November 1992, Paul and Donna began a new chapter in their lives when they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. One of the main reasons for their relocation was to be closer to family, especially Donna's sister and brother-in-law, Laverne Semmerling Henry and Edward Henry. Family was always at the heart of Paul and Donna's lives, and their move to Las Vegas gave them the opportunity to spend more time with those they loved while creating many new memories together.
Although Paul had retired from UPS, retirement did not keep him still for long. He entered the Las Vegas casino industry and worked at several properties over the years, including the Eldorado Casino, California Hotel, and Rampart Casino. Paul later worked at the airport before eventually becoming a crossing guard, where he continued his lifelong tradition of serving others by helping protect children and families in his community.
In many ways, Paul's working life came full circle. He began his adult life serving his country in the United States Army and concluded his working years serving his local community. Whether the responsibility was to his country, his employer, his community, or his family, Paul believed in showing up, working hard, and doing his part.
Throughout the years, the family Paul and Donna created continued to grow. In addition to their four sons, Paul lovingly welcomed his daughters-in-law, Lynn, Kelly, and Alpha, into the family. He became the proud grandfather of Josh, Naomi, Chandler, Mya, Mikayla, and Marissa, and later the proud great-grandfather of Levi and Sawyer. Each new generation brought Paul tremendous happiness and became another part of the family legacy he cherished so deeply.
When Paul wasn't working or spending time with his family, he enjoyed golf, fishing, and baseball. He especially loved watching his Chicago Cubs. One place held a particularly special place in his heart - Shawano, Wisconsin. It was the setting for treasured fishing trips, family gatherings, and countless memories that his loved ones will carry with them for generations.
Those who knew Paul will remember an amazing, caring, and giving man who consistently put the needs and happiness of others before his own. He believed in working hard, providing for your family, and earning your way through life. These were not simply lessons Paul talked about; they were values he demonstrated through the way he lived and the example he set for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Above all else, Paul was a family man. Of everything he accomplished and experienced during his 80 years, nothing meant more to him than his family, and at the heart of that family was Donna. She was his wife, his partner, his companion, and the person with whom he built the life and family he loved so deeply.
Paul's Catholic faith was an important part of his life. His family finds comfort in that faith and in the belief that although his earthly journey has ended, he has been welcomed into eternal life.
Paul's greatest legacy cannot be measured by a career, job title, or award. It lives in the family he and Donna built together, the people he helped throughout his life, the sacrifices he made for others, and the values he passed from one generation to the next.
Paul will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend. Most of all, he will be remembered as a good man who loved his family with everything he had.
His life was one of service - from serving his country as a young man, to working hard to provide for his family, to serving his community in his later years. His presence will be deeply missed, but the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the memories he created will remain with his family forever.
Rest in peace, Paul. A life well lived, a family deeply loved, and a legacy that will never be forgotten
