Remedios “Remy” Caballero was born on March 26, 1944 in Victoria, Tarlac, Philippines to Martin and Patro Rigor and was the youngest of four children – Victoria, Pablo, Filipina, and Remy. As a child, she was a tomboy and proudly defiant. As she grew up, her defiance turned into being headstrong and determined and decided that her dream was to go to the United States of America. With the help of her family, especially her father, she raised the funds to go to University of Santo Tomas (UST), Manila to pursue her nursing degree.
While at UST, she met her future husband, Rafael G. Caballero, who supported her through her schooling. After graduation, she immediately found a program for her and 12 of her colleagues to travel to Chicago on a work-exchange program. On May 13, 1966, Friday, those 13 nurses-to-be left the Philippines and went on a “magical plane” as she called it to Chicago, IL. They looked their absolute best as was the custom. She worked at various hospitals, but ultimately landed at Hines VA, Hines, IL. During her time in Chicago, she petitioned for Rafael to come to the states on a work visa. One of her patients was the chairman of an architectural firm and agreed to sponsor him. He arrived in July of 1967, and they married almost immediately on August 5, 1967. They began their family soon after; Judi was born in April of 1968 and Jay was born in May of 1970. They continued their careers and lives in the Chicago Area - Romeoville and Darian, being involved with the communities they supported.
Remy’s ambitious attitude and weariness of the cold winters led the family to move to Redlands, CA after being transferred to Loma Linda VA. In 1978, the family built friendships with neighbors, church members, and became Filipino community leaders. They were extremely involved with the church choir and bowling leagues. Despite working long hours, both Remy and Rafael made time to take vacations, going to places like Ensenda, Mexico, Hawaii, and Las Vegas, NV. Las Vegas turned out to be their favorite place and they did weekend turnarounds on a regular basis. This foreshadows the future, as it will turn out to be their next move. Remy was working at the VA for a while and decided she needed to move ahead in her career. She enrolled in the Masters of Nursing program at University of La Verne. In 1983, November, Jennifer was born (oops!). This put a pause in her schooling, but then she graduated in 1987 with her Masters of Nursing in Healthcare Administration.
Remy was given an opportunity to transfer to another VA, and it just so happened to be in Las Vegas, NV. So, in 1991, Remy and Jennifer left California for the bright lights in the desert. Rafael joined them one year later. She worked with the VA for a few years, but decided to retire early because of other opportunities that would teach her to have her own business. She became a case manager for multiple hospitals, and she learned about the growing industry of home health. In 2000, her beloved husband who supported her throughout every endeavor, passed away. As devastating as this was to her, she continued her call to serve others. She stayed active in her Filipino, nursing and church communities, volunteering and being in the church choir, and of course, her favorite pastime - gambling. After researching and networking in the home health industry, she was able to find a partner to help her start her own home health company called VIP Home Health. After one year, she left that company to start another one on her own called Hope Home Health. From 2006 to 2016, Hope Home Health was her “pride”. In 2011, Jay and family moved to Las Vegas to be closer to Remy. She and Jay opened Hope PCA in conjunction with Hope Home Health to support patients by sending caregivers to their homes. After Hope Home Health closed, she was able to put her energy into Hope PCA, spending time with family, going to the casino, volunteering at St Joseph and Guardian Angel Cathedral, planning events with USTNAA/UST Class 65 Alumni, and doing annual medical missions to the Philippines.
Remy’s life up to her death was all about helping others, ensuring that those around her were loved and supported, and serving God. She shared her God given love because that’s what gave her joy and happiness. She is survived by daughter Judi (Roger) McFarland, son Jay Andre (Barbara) Caballero, daughter Jennifer (Victor Jr) Caballero-Buen; grandchildren - Daniel (Caitlin) McFarland, Andrew Caballero, Selena (Zach) Wright, Samantha Caballero, Kairi Buen; brothers-in-law, Domingo Rebolledo and Emil Caballero, and many nieces and nephews.
