

Robert D. Gray, 87, passed Sept 8, 2013. Born April 24, 1926 in Omaha, NE to Dale and Elizabeth, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 where he proudly witnessed the raising of our country’s flag at the battle of Iwo Jima. He fought in many battles during WWII including the battle of Okinawa. He began teaching diesel mechanics in the Army after the war. Arriving in Las Vegas in 1958, he worked for Blue Diamond Gypsum. He was a founding member of Teamsters Local 631 and taught for many years for the apprenticeship program. Hired on at the Nevada Test Site in 1966 as an Operating Engineer and later taught for CCSD at the Area Technical Training Center. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, children Barbara Dempsey, Carol Houghland (Jerry), Robert Jr., Paul Scobee, Dale (Carolyn), Kathleen Dawson, Rebecca Rebentisch (Marty), 26 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and brother Daniel. Visitation Friday, Sept 13th 4-7PM at Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones where services will be held Saturday, Sept 14th at 10AM followed by burial at Palm Northwest Cemetery, 6701 N Jones.
