

Ruben Pelayo Alba passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014. Ruben’s parents immigrated to Southern Nevada from Mexico in the 1920s. His father worked for the Union Pacific railroad and the family lived in one of the “railroad cottages.” Ruben was born at home January 7, 1931. A proud native Las Vegan, Ruben loved to share experiences about life in early Las Vegas. Ruben attended the 5th Street School and received his diploma from Las Vegas High School as a member of the Class of 1949. Ruben began working at an early age. He worked for Palm Mortuary then changed careers and worked for Franklin Life Insurance Company. He concluded his working career as a personal property appraiser with the Clark County Assessor’s Office. Ruben was very involved in his community. He worked with Sertoma for many years, and was an active member of Our Lady of Las Vegas Parrish, and later, St. Joseph Husband of Mary Parrish. Ruben was extremely proud of his family, and was a generous and loving grandfather. He is survived by his brother, Max (Evelyn); children: Janet (Clayton) Poteat, John (Diana), and Rick (Robin Lamb); five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
