Samuel (Pop) L. Smith, Sr. passed away on Monday, June 19, 2017, while at Mountain View Hospital surrounded by his wife and oldest son after a brave fight to overcome a major brain injury. He was 70 years old. He was born on April 22, 1947, in the small town of Jennings, FL. He was a longtime resident of Las Vegas, NV but still a country boy at heart. He was a believer in God’s word and the power of God. He was a simple yet strong family man, one who took great pride in being the patriarch of his family. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his wife and children. His wife and children undoubtedly knew they were unconditionally loved as never an opportunity to proclaim and affirm his love was wasted. He started working at the very young age of six and worked over 30 years as a carpenter building a home for his family from the ground up and moving them out of housing projects in his twenties. He would begin a new career as a Slot Technician in his forties. Later in his fifties would care for many young children as a foster parent until enjoying full retirement in 2016. He is survived by his wife of more than 51½ years, Alga Canty-Smith; two sons, Samuel L. (Jr.) and Selves Lethel Smith; three daughters, Gardis Canty, Maddette Smith, and Dee Maybin; six grandchildren (Robert Walker, Adom Quadree, Shania and Jayden Smith, Andres’ and Aubry Maybin), three sisters (Dorothy Ward, Eartha Mae Richardson, and Hattie Stewart) and two brothers (Walter Spencer Gibson, Jr. and Levon Anderson); a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
