Setsuko Haginiwa Klinefelter passed away June 4, 2018. Born on February 4, 1950, Atsuko, as she was known to family and friends, grew up and graduated from high school in Yokosuka, Japan. While working at the U.S Navy base in Yokosuka, she met and fell in love with Bob Klinefelter, who was stationed there. They married in 1969 and moved to Las Vegas in 1970 to be near Bob’s family. She became an American citizen in 1994.
Everyone who met Atsuko immediately saw her welcoming smile and her kindness. She was also witty and smart and fiercely loyal. Besides joining her husband in the printing business, Atsuko enjoyed taking classes at the athletic club, cooking shows on TV, loving her pets, and being with friends. She also watched Japanese TV so that she would not lose her first language.
The family is grateful to Comprehensive Cancer Center of Nevada, Sunset location, and Southwest Medical Hospice for their kindness to Atsuko and her family.
Atsuko was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 47 years, Robert B. Klinefelter. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Szymanski (Fred); her grandson, Matthew Szymanski; her brother, Akila Haginiwa in Japan; her sisters-in-law, Barbara Agonia (Bob) and Martha Roberson; nieces, Beth Kornacki and Jer Roberson-Strange; and nephew, Craig Roberson.
A memorial service will be held at10:00 A. M., Tuesday, June 26 at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, NV 89005. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any no-kill animal shelter.
