

Sheila (Young) Hughes, 87, of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, February 2, 2026. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1111 North Michael Way, Las Vegas, NV 89108. Father Lucas will officiate. Palm Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be held 1:00 Saturday, May 23rd at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Battle Creek, Nebraska. Sheila was born on May 15,1938, in Battle Creek, Nebraska, the daughter of French Alexander and Edith (Anderson) Young. She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1955 and went on to attend Wayne State College, where she earned her teaching degree. In 1958, Sheila married Francis “Mike” Hughes. From this union came four sons. Over the years, they lived in Germany, Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, Florida, Nebraska, and Nevada. Sheila began her teaching career in a country school. She was an artist and loved painting, baking, sewing, raising violets, and solving crossword puzzles. She cherished being a wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Francis “Mike” Hughes of Las Vegas; her four sons, Joseph (Bonnie) Hughes of Las Vegas, Patrick Hughes of Las Vegas, Michael Hughes of Las Vegas, and Thomas Hughes of Las Vegas; four grandchildren, Nicholas (Lori) Hughes of Camdenton, Missouri, Adam (Amber Larson) Hughes of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jennifer Hughes of Dripping Springs, Texas, and Allison Hughes of Las Vegas, Nevada; and five great-grandchildren, Jakob Hughes of Fontana, California, Madison Hughes of Okinawa, Japan, Reese and Ryder Larson-Hughes of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Gavin Hughes Arencibia of Dripping Springs, Texas. She is also survived by cousins, as well as many nieces and nephews. Sheila was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Jesse Beaton; her brother, Perry (Yuko) Young; and her sisters, Lovey Ann (Jack) Wantlin and Julia (Dennis) Petersen.
