Shirley Ferron Swanson

December 15, 1919July 17, 2013

The younger daughter of one of Las Vegas’s pioneering families, Shirley Ferron Swanson passed away in Las Vegas NV on July 17, 2013 of natural causes at age 93. Shirley was born in Las Vegas on December 15, 1919 and was a graduate of Las Vegas High School. She attended the University of Nevada, Reno before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles because UNR only offered the first two years of study at that time. Following her graduation from UCLA in 1940 at age 20, she went to Washington DC where she worked for the Truman Commission. This is where she met her husband, Bernard J. Swanson. They were married in San Diego in 1942 and after his service as a Marine in the South Pacific, moved in 1946 to Las Vegas, where they raised their family. In 1965 she became administrative assistant for the Chemistry Department at the newly created local university, Nevada Southern (now UNLV), retiring in the late 1970s. She was a founding member of, and continually active volunteer for, the Assistance League of Las Vegas. She is preceded in death by her parents, William & Ruth Ferron, her sister, Barbara Ferron Doyle, and her husband, Bernard J. Swanson. Survivors include sons Larry Swanson of Manhattan Beach CA, and David Swanson and Tim Swanson of Las Vegas; and three grandchildren, Reid Swanson of Santa Cruz CA, Dean Swanson of Seattle WA, and Heather Swanson of Las Vegas. Memorial Services will be held at Christ Church Episcopal, 2000 South Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas NV, 89104, at 1 pm on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Assistance League of Las Vegas in memory of Shirley Ferron Swanson.
