Sonya Lenay Aikels-Curry

On May 12th, 2026, Sonya Aikels-Curry, a loving mother, dedicated pediatrician, treasured daughter, and loyal friend, went home to be with the Lord. She left behind a legacy marked by her compassion, humor, resilience, and service to her community.

Born with a heart for service, Dr. Aikels spent her life caring for children and supporting families through their most vulnerable moments. For decades, she served as a trusted pediatrician whose gentle presence, sharp clinical mind, and steadfast commitment brought comfort and healing to countless patients. Her work was more than a profession — it was her calling, and she fulfilled it with extraordinary grace.

Beyond her white coat, Sonya was the embodiment of strength and determination. She balanced the demands of medicine with the deep love she held for her family. As a mother, she nurtured her children with patience, wisdom, and joy. As a wife, she was a true partner — supportive, steady, and devoted. As a daughter and friend, she offered kindness, laughter, and a listening ear to everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Whether facing long work days, personal challenges, or the everyday weight of caring for others, Sonya’s resilience was unmatched. Serving as an inspiration to those around her, she met each moment throughout her life with unshakeable courage and spirit.

Dr. Aikels leaves behind a legacy of healing, hope, and humanity. Her impact will continue to echo in the lives of the children she cared for, the families she supported, and the loved ones she held close. Though her absence leaves an immeasurable void, her light lives on in every life she touched.

She is survived by her daughters, Victoria and Valentina; her sisters, Reida and Dawn; her aunt, Betty; and her cousin and best friend, Kellie, who will forever carry her love and memory in their hearts.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in honor of Sonya, an avid donor to St. Jude Hospital.
