He was born at Bakersfield, California, on March 24, 1952 to Hollis and Flerron Justis, and moved to Alaska with his family in 1960 where he attended Kenai Central High School. He participated in football and wrestling, placing first in Alaska State Wrestling Championship during his junior year. He graduated in 1970 from South High School at Bakersfield, California, and attended Porterville College.
Vic married Betsy Blair in 1973 at Anchorage, Alaska, and they raised a son, Jason Justis. During his years of living in Alaska, Vic commercial fished salmon and herring; worked as an electrical lineman; co-founded Torvik Electric, Ltd in the early 1980’s; and owned and operated construction and mining ventures. Vic lived in many areas of the United States from California to Alaska; and crisscrossed the country as far as Florida while working his trade of electrical lineman. He worked at the Nevada Test Site in the 1970’s; and built homes in California and Hawaii. He retired from SDGE as instructor for the Lineman Apprenticeship Training School at San Diego, California in 2016 and spoke of his apprenticeship classes with pride.
Vic took great pleasure in giving back to an electrical industry that had given him so much. Vic was a very charismatic, loving Christian man who shared his fascinating personal testimony freely to co-workers or to groups around a camp fire on the beach. He was an explorer who loved to travel and to him, nothing seemed impossible. Vic especially enjoyed feeding wild birds and beach walking in San Diego. He loved to cook for lineman gatherings, and his homemade soups are legendary. He also had a passionate heart for the disadvantaged; putting the needs of others above his own as he often gave his own
coat to the homeless during Alaskan winters. He was a kind man that is missed by many and loved by even more; but greater than the sorrow of his death is the joy that he brought to so many; as he left an indelible mark upon everyone who crossed his path in life.
Vic is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Jacqueline Justis; mother, Flerron Slater; sister, Sherron Collins; step-sisters and their spouses, Connie and Bill Green, Susan and Herb Mann; grandchildren Miles Justis, Miracle and Destiny Hand; many nephews and nieces, including Tonya Collins and C’Les Jensema. Vic was predeceased by his father, Hollis Justis, and his step-father, Kenneth Slater. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Vic said that if he had more time on earth he wanted to share God’s Word with more people. In honor of his wish, memorial donations may be made in Vic’s name to Gideon Bibles E-Cards at http://www.sendtheword.org/all-ecards.aspx . Please send Gideon E-Cards to [email protected] .
