May 8, 1929 – January 30, 2026
Walburga “Wally” Agena was born on May 8, 1929, in Tauberfeld, a small farming village in Bavaria, Germany. She was one of seven children.
Growing up in Germany during World War II instilled in her a strong work ethic, resourcefulness, and independence. She always cherished the memory that Victory in Europe (VE) Day coincided with her sixteenth birthday on May 8, 1945, regarding it as a most meaningful birthday gift.
At the close of the war, Wally was employed at a hotel in Rottach-Egern. As American soldiers were quartered there, she met her future husband, Robert Agena. Marrying Robert opened a new chapter in her life, which she embraced with courage and enthusiasm.
As a war bride, Wally journeyed from Germany to New York, then to San Francisco, and finally to Honolulu—traveling by plane, train, and ship. She arrived in Hawaii to live with Robert’s traditional Japanese family, transitioning from a snowy German winter to the tropics. There, she quickly adapted, learning to speak Hawaiian Pidgin English (with her distinctive German accent) and enjoying new foods such as sushi.
Wally and Robert later built their own family, welcoming three children—Sonja, Bobby, and Christine—and relocating to Los Angeles. While raising her family, Wally worked for 21 years as a teacher’s aide with the Los Angeles Unified School District at Dorris Place Elementary School. She was greatly loved by the students, and her home became a favorite stop for neighborhood children on Halloween due to her generous supply of candy.
Over the years, her family expanded to include two grandsons, Ryan and Steven; a great-granddaughter, Natalie; and a great-great-granddaughter, Isabella.
After retiring in 1992, Wally and Robert moved to Las Vegas, a city they had long enjoyed as a vacation destination. Las Vegas became their cherished home and “happy place,” where they became well-known patrons of local casinos and formed many lasting friendships.
Wally is survived by her daughters Sonja (husband Rod) and Christine (husband Ron); her grandson Ryan (wife Christina); her great-granddaughter Natalie; her great-great-granddaughter Isabella; and numerous loving family members in both the United States and Germany.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert; her son, Bobby; her grandson, Steven; her siblings Anni, Martin, Maria, Leonhard, Berta, and Michael; and her parents.
Wally lived a remarkable life marked by resilience, adaptability, and deep love for her family. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at Palm Mortuary - Cheyenne, located at 7400 West Cheyenne Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89129, United States. The service is scheduled for February 24, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
