Walter J. Abbott, age 77, of Las Vegas, NV passed away peacefully on November 30, 2022, at Infinity Hospice Care in Las Vegas. Walter was born on July 11, 1945 in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born to Walter Odum and Jessie May Abbott.
Walter joined the United States Air Force after graduating from high school in June 1964. He served 22 years before retiring in August 1986, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. During his Air Force career, he worked ten years as a Protective Coating Technician in Civil Engineering and in Aircraft Maintenance and 12 years in Radiology, achieving the position of Radiology Superintendent. Walter served two tours in Vietnam.
After completing his military career, Walter attended Southern Illinois University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Care Management in 1989. Walter worked in hospitals in radiology in CA and NV. In his last hospital assignment with the University Medical Center, he started as a Manager in Radiology and achieved the position of Director of Radiology (Imaging Services) before retiring from this position in 2015.
His academic achievements in radiology include: In 1984, he became a member of The American Society of Radiologic Technologies; in 2010, he was designated as a Certified Radiology Administrator; and in 2011, he was designated to the highly distinguished position as a Credentialed Member of The American Academy of Medical Administrators.
Walter was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family dearly. He is survived by his wife, Zora Abbott of 49 years; his stepson, Patrick Breaux (LeLaine); a daughter, Teresa Abbott; three grandchildren - Ryan Abbott – Patrick Breaux Jr. – Jessica Breaux; and one great-grandson, Quest Miller Abbott.
He is also survived by four brothers: Bill Abbitt (Priscilla) - Chester Abbitt (Linda) – Alphonso Abbott (Regina) and Curtis Witherspoon (Ethel); an aunt, Martha Kay Gullick (Norris); and many nephews and nieces.
Walter was an active member of his church who loved and devoted himself to it. He received his license as a Minister in 2018. He faithfully served as the Minister for the Intercessory Prayer Ministry, the Invocation Prayer Ministry, and the Founder of the Adult Education Ministry. Also in the absence of the Pastor, he taught during both Sunday Services and on Tuesday and Friday Bible Study.
Walter had a great sense of humor and a generous heart to those in need. A private family home going celebration for him will be held on December 6 at Palm Cheyenne Mortuary in Las Vegas, NV.
