

Walter "Doc" John Dybeck, Jr. passed away 9/18/24, at the age of 76, after a short illness. He is survived by his wife of 9 1/2 years, Jacqueline, stepsons, David Swift and Edward Vacanti, stepdaughter, Lisa Barnes and grandson, Vincent Barnes. Doc leaves behind many friends from his over 50 years serving with the VFW, 30 years as a surgical nurse at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas and his many years as a firefighter and EMT in his home town of Dunkirk, NY. Doc was a dedicated FMF United States Navy Corpsman as a part of the Echo 23 1st Platoon, attached to the Third Marine Division (Semper Fi) from January 1969 – December 1969 during the Vietnam War. Doc served in various camps by the DMZ and was wounded on March 4th of that year. During his tour, he was awarded a Purple Heart, combat action ribbon and Vietnam service medal.
Upon his return to the States, Doc joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars in January, 1970 in New York. He had the rare honor of serving as VFW State Commander in two states: New York and Nevada. In Nevada, he held numerous positions within the VFW, including National Surgeon General from 2001 to 2002, National Assistant Inspector General from 2017 to 2018, Military Order of the Cooties Nevada Grand Commander from 2006 to 2007, along with several other national and state-appointed roles.
Doc's memorial service will be held Sunday, November 10th at 10:00 AM at Palm Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, followed by a Celebration of Life. All friends are welcome.
