Walter Homer Gregory, Jr (Tom) was born August 28, 1929. He was the 5th of nine children born to the late Walter H Sr. and Hassie Mai Gregory in Bells, Tenn. He completed formal education and received his high school diploma from Central High School in Alamo, Tenn.
After high school he moved to Brooklyn, New York and worked with his Uncle, Ruben Herron until he joined the United States Army,in September 1951. He served two tours of duty in the Korean Conflict and received an Honorable Discharge in October 1959.
After his military service, Walter returned to New York. He worked for New York City Department of Parks and the Department of Highways until his retirement in 1982. In addition to his full time job Walter was an all around handyman. He always had odd jobs including painting and janitorial maintenance. His knowledge and strong work ethic endeared him to his Church, family, friends and community.
He met and married Ardella Cross in 1966 and of the union was two daughters, Robin and Leslie.
As a lifetime member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, he served as an Usher, a Steward and Trustee. He also volunteered for the food pantry.
Walter departed this life on August 8, 2022 at 1:45AM. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 56 years, Ardella, daughter Robin, Brother Riley (Hadester) Gregory, Sister Bennie Lee Buchanan and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Sr. and Hassle Mai, his brothers, Willie, James, Harvey, John, Flyniod, his sister Dorothy Smith and his daughter Leslie.
