

A memorial service for Elbert will be held Wednesday, April 5, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services, 500 Harbins Road, Lilburn, GA 30047.
Douglas was born in a farm house in East Bernstadt, Kentucky, on February 15, 1942, the son of Grant Burkhart and Nellie Burkhart (Bonnett). Douglas was raised in London, Kentucky with his older brother Roy Jones, older sister Geneva York, younger sister Geraldine Burkhart and younger brother Randy Burkhart. He attended Laurel County public schools, graduating with the class of 1956 from Hazel Green High School. Following graduation, Doug enlisted in the United States Army and served his country from 1958 until 1964 in Korea. While in Korea, he married his wife Caressa and had his first son Charles.
Upon returning to civilian life, Doug worked various sales positions until retirement in 2015. During his military career and civilian life, Doug became a father of three sons: Charles, Roger, and Steven.
Doug enjoyed spending his time with his family, fishing, reading Western novels and tending to his large gardens in Locust Grove, Georgia.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, and his older brother. He leaves behind a host of nephews and nieces whom he adored. Doug was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be missed by all.
Doug is survived by his wife Caressa of Tucker; his children, Charles of Palm Coast, Florida, Roger of Woodstock, Georgia and Steven of Tucker, Georgia., four grandchildren: Matthew Goodall, Andrea Smoley, Joshua Burkhart, Caitlin Burkhart and great grandson Logan Smoley. Doug is also survived by his brother, Randy Burkhart of London, Kentucky and best childhood friend, Denver Jones of London, Kentucky.
Doug’s final resting place will be his favorite fishing spot, Rock Castle River in Eastern Kentucky.
