James served in the United States Marines Force Recon in 1958-1960 with an honorable discharge. He then joined the National Forest Service as an elite jumper. He was also a dive master in scuba. In 1961, James married Bonnie Curry of Crawfordsville, Indiana. Working for J.C. Penney, James and Bonnie began their family in Indianapolis, Indiana. They transferred to Doraville, Georgia in 1967. James started his own electrical company. He is survived by Bonnie, his wife of 56 years and children: Kim and spouse Russell, Wendy, and Michael: six grandchildren, Hannah and spouse Brandon, Ashley, Michaela, Corey and spouse Jennifer, Meaghan and spouse Russ: six great grandchildren, Titus and Gage, Clark and Kate, Jack and Bennett: sister, Janis of Alaska. A memorial of James’ life will be celebrated at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made towards: Navy-Marine Corp Relief Society (www.nmcrs.org) in honor of James E. Powers.
