Dave was born on July 11, 1941, to Foy Wildon Dickson and Alice Hall Collins Dickson in the Indian Land community of Lancaster County. On June 23, 1963, Dave married Judith Ann Brackett.
One of seven siblings, Dave grew up on a farm and enjoyed playing sports, hunting, and fishing. He was a graduate of The University of South Carolina, where he obtained a degree in Physical Education. Upon graduation, Dave took a teaching and coaching position at Wampee Little River High School. He and Judy lived in a small house on school grounds for several years and they welcomed their first child Michael into the family.
The family later moved to Ocean Drive and grew with the addition of sons Rhett and Mark. Dave, who is still known as “coach” by many, coached many sports at Wampee and North Myrtle Beach High, but he is remembered most prominently as head coach of the North Myrtle Beach Chiefs Football team. Dave became the athletic director at North Myrtle Beach High. He later earned a Master's degree from The University of South Carolina and took a position as principal at North Myrtle Beach Primary School. Dave retired from this position after many years of service to the community.
Dave and Judy were able to enjoy a short time of retirement together before Judy passed away. Following her passing, he took great comfort in his involvement with Trinity United Methodist Church’s PEP club, his membership and golfing at the Surf Club, and the Optimist Club. Dave greatly enjoyed attending the football games of the North Myrtle Beach Chiefs and was honored to be inducted into the North Myrtle Beach Hall of Fame. He was so proud of each of his student athletes and remembered them fondly.
A loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Dave was kind and generous to everyone he knew. He is survived by his sons Michael (Carman) Dickson and Rhett Dickson, all of Charleston, SC; grandsons Dillon, Robert, and Parks of Charleston, SC; granddaughters Haley and Bridgett of Little River, SC; great-granddaughter Saylor of Little River, SC; brothers Billy Dickson of Kingsport, TN, and Jim (Alice) Dickson of Waxhaw, NC; a nephew Jim (Jennifer); and niece Mary (Joel). Dave is pre-deceased by his wife Judy, his son Mark, and siblings Aubree, Deree, Dot, Foy Jr, and John Emmett.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 am. on Saturday, July 16, at Trinity United Methodist Church, followed immediately by the service at 11:00 am. Interment will be at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens. Lee Funeral Home will handle arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dave Dickson Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will benefit the athletes of North Myrtle Beach High School. Chiefs Athletic Booster Club Dave Dickson Scholarship - 3781 Sea Mountain Hwy Little River, South Carolina 29566 - Tax ID # 57-0770567.
