David Charles Opdyke

David C. Opdyke passed into the care of his heavenly father on June 28, 2024, at his home with family by his side. David and his wife Karen E. Gerken were married for one year and were blessed with a loving and joyful relationship for the little time God gave them.

David was born in Norwich, CT on October 11, 1957. He enjoyed a childhood in Barrington, RI and frequented the beach in Saunderstown, RI; one of his fondest memories. He had a lifelong passion for Boy Scouting, sports and the outdoors. David was very proud to be an engineer and was considered a subject matter expert in his field. Karen and David bonded over their blended families, their love for Jesus, and Garth Brooks. He wouldn’t admit it but he had a soft spot and fierce love for his fur babies Murphy, River, Archer and Puff.

David leaves behind his children Kristen Hovatter (Jimmy), Ryanne Potocki (Michael), Stephen (Stephanie), Julie (Jacob), Richard (Audrey) and Andrea Elliott (Michael) from a previous marriage to Mary Acito Southcott. Through his marriage to Karen, David was blessed with more children Travis Gerken (Fitore), Shane Gerken (Marta), Kylie Gerken (David), Skylar Gerken (Rachel), and Chance Gerken. He was a proud Grampy of twelve grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind his best friends and siblings Ann Deeley (Jim), Trish Smith, and Ed Perregaux (Cheryl).

He was preceded in death by his father Richard, his mother Charlotte and his beloved Ollie the dog.

There will be a private service for the family and close friends with a celebration of life to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in David’s honor to Crescent Health Hospice of SC, The Rock Church of SC or Boy Scouts of America.
