

Born in the Bronx, New York, Don was the son of the late Bernard D. Dunphy and Nora McKessy Dunphy, both emigrants to the United States. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Michele Ann Dunphy; his brother, Thomas Dunphy; and his sister, Roseann Dunphy Prescott.
Don is survived by his loving nieces, Carol Nichols (Harry), Janet Prescott Davies (John), and Donna O’Reilly Einemann (Bob); and nephews, Michael Dunphy (Susan), William Prescott (Kim), Robert Dunphy (Connie), and Keith O’Reilly (Monica). He is also survived by eight great-nephews and great-nieces, fifteen great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces, and seven great-great-great-nephews and great-great-great-nieces.
Don graduated from Manhattan College in 1967, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in economics and minors in accounting and psychology. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970 and received an honorable discharge.
Following his military service, Don worked for five years as a social worker for the City of New York. He later spent four years with Local 28 Sheet Metal Workers as manager of the benefits department. In 1976, Don began a 32-year career with Prudential Financial Services, starting as a sales agent and retiring in 2008 as an officer of the company.
Deeply committed to service and faith, Don volunteered as an instructor for the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine in College Park, Maryland, and served as an adult advisor to a township youth group in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. He was a devoted member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Myrtle Beach Division, where he faithfully served as treasurer for 12 years.
A prayer service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at Lee Funeral Home and Crematory, with a visitation to follow until 5:00 p.m. that evening. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church, 5105 Ocean Highway West, Shallotte, North Carolina 28470. Inurnment at the church will immediately follow the Mass.
